Taking cognisance of the instances of many doctors in the State not adhering to the National Medical Commission's (NMC) directive to prescribe drugs using generic names, the Director of Medical Education (DME) has instructed all the Principals of Government Medical Colleges and Superintendents of Government General Hospitals to ensure that the doctors follow the norms.

Reiterating the need for compliance, the Director of Medical Education Dr DV Lakshmi Narasimham has instructed, "Doctors must use generic names as mandated under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956."

Clarifying on the eligibility of the open school students to appear in the National Eligibility-Entrance Test, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has specified that as per the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) 2023 regulations, such students are allowed to appear in the MBBS entrance examination.

The Commission further clarified that the students are allowed to study an additional subject from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) with the condition that the study needs to be carried out from any authorized institution.

Five doctors at Jhansi Medical College have been suspended in connection with the death of an 18-year-old patient, who was admitted to the hospital after a road accident. It was alleged that after being brought to the hospital, the patient was attended to by the doctors after hours, leading to his worsened condition and consequent death.

Apart from the doctors, action has also been taken against four sister-in-charges, who have been removed from emergency duty. Previously, the Emergency Medical Officer Dr. RS Rana had been suspended in this connection.

A recent incident involving the burning of a large volume of biomedical, plastic, and paper waste at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TvMCH) has sparked outrage among residents of nearby areas. The residents from MGR Nagar, Periyar Nagar, and Indra Nagar filed a formal complaint with the hospital dean, Dr. Revathy Balan, demanding immediate action to stop the practice.

In response, the residents also threatened to lay siege to the hospital on Wednesday. The waste was burnt near the Regional Cancer Centre block, an area that is particularly sensitive due to the presence of vulnerable patients. The burnt materials included blood sample containers, saline bottles, cannulas, used gloves, expired tablets, as well as plastic, food, and paper waste.
