819 Medical Colleges, over 1.29 lakh MBBS seats in India this year, says Health Minister
Union Health Minister JP Nadda recently highlighted a major transformation in India's medical education landscape, announcing that the number of medical colleges in the country has more than doubled- from 387 in 2014 to 819 in 2025 -and the total number of MBBS seats has surged from 51,000 to 1.29 lakh during the same period.
Similarly, postgraduate medical seats have risen from 31,000 to 78,000, reflecting a significant expansion of opportunities for medical aspirants across the nation.

Jharkhand: 5 children test HIV positive; Civil Surgeon and medical officer suspended
In a disturbing incident in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, five children with thalassemia have tested HIV-positive following blood transfusions. Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Sunday ordered the suspension of the West Singhbhum civil surgeon, the medical officer in charge of the blood bank, and the technicians in connection with the case.
A high-level probe has also been initiated following the suspension of officials at the direction of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

Jharkhand Shocker: 5 children test HIV positive; Civil Surgeon, medical officer suspended
Hospital and gastroenterologist ordered to pay Rs 6.6 lakh for 2 corrective surgeries post-polypectomy
Holding a private hospital, its founder-chairman and a consultant gastroenterologist guilty of medical negligence during a polypectomy surgery conducted on a patient, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission I, Hyderabad, directed them to pay Rs 6.6 lakh compensation.
It was observed that the surgical procedure, which was conducted back in 2022, caused life-threatening complications to the patient. Apart from the compensation, the Consumer Commission has also directed them to pay Rs 50,000 as legal expenses.
