Sugar content in packaged foods and drinks to be limited, ICMR proposes new guidelines
India may soon introduce its first recommended limits on sugar content in packaged foods and beverages. The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have proposed new guidelines, which could affect products like soft drinks, juices, cookies, ice-creams, and cereals. The Economic Times reports that many stakeholders in the packaged food industry find the guidelines impractical, arguing they were not consulted beforehand.
The revised guidelines, replacing 13-year-old norms, propose that solid foods should derive no more than 5% of their energy from added sugars, and not exceed 10% from total sugars. For beverages, the limits are set at 10% of energy from added sugars and a maximum of 30% from total sugars, including those naturally present in fruit juices and milk.

Choosing right sunglasses for eye protection in high temperatures
With the heat wave and rising temperatures, protecting your eyes is essential, especially when you need to go outside. While affordable sunglasses from supermarkets and online retailers often meet basic UV protection standards, their overall quality, including visual clarity, can be subpar.
Opticians, regulated by national health standards, provide a more reliable option. Sunglasses sold by professional opticians typically bear CE and UKCA marks, indicating they meet higher safety and quality standards. Opticians can also help you choose sunglasses that offer the right combination of protection, comfort, and style. European law classifies sunglass lenses as “personal protective equipment,” with five levels of protection. Category 3 lenses, the most common, are suitable for various conditions, including driving. Darker lenses do not necessarily offer better protection, as the appropriate category depends on the intended use.
