Overview
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced key reforms in the NEET UG 2026 counselling process to make admissions more transparent and student-friendly. According to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, counselling will begin shortly with several software-based improvements. Candidates who are allotted a seat and opt for upgradation in subsequent rounds will no longer be required to physically report to the allotted college for admission formalities. Their admission will remain valid within the counselling system while they participate in further rounds, reports NDTV.
Additionally, the MCC has introduced an online resignation facility, allowing candidates to surrender their allotted seats directly through the counselling portal without visiting the college. Another major change is the introduction of online document submission for NRI quota applicants, enabling candidates seeking NRI reservation to upload the required documents through the MCC portal. The National Testing Agency (NTA) had declared the NEET UG 2026 results on July 16, with nearly 20 lakh candidates appearing for the examination across 5,440 centres in India and abroad. Of these, around 11.21 lakh candidates qualified for admission to undergraduate medical, dental, AYUSH, and allied health science programmes.
NEET Candidate Alleges Score Changed Thrice on NTA Portal, Moves Supreme Court
Another NEET-UG 2026 aspirant has approached the Supreme Court, alleging that his examination score changed three times within 24 hours on the National Testing Agency (NTA) portal after the results were declared on July 16. According to the petition, the candidate expected to score 620-640 marks based on the official answer key. However, his result initially displayed 650 marks, later dropped to 500, and finally fell to 135 marks after subsequent logins. The petitioner claimed he received no explanation from the NTA despite submitting representations and an RTI application seeking his original OMR sheet and related examination records.
The petitioner further alleged that during a visit to the NTA office in New Delhi, officials showed him an OMR sheet on a computer that he claimed was not the one he had filled during the examination. According to the plea, officials maintained that it was the only OMR sheet available in their records. The aspirant told the Supreme Court that he is not seeking re-evaluation of his result but wants his original OMR sheet and related digital records to be preserved and produced for independent verification. The petition comes amid recent education reforms announced by the Centre following the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy, including the creation of an expert panel to recommend reforms in the NTA, according to The Week report.
NEET SS: Supreme Court Restores 151 Seats, TN Medical Officers Slam State
The Tamil Nadu Medical Officers, which had earlier filed a separate writ petition in the Supreme Court in relation to the NEET super speciality case, have now slammed the Tamil Nadu government for the loss of 151 unfilled NEET SS seats, saying the situation arose because of poor handling of the case and negligence from the beginning.
The criticism came a day after the Supreme Court directed the Tamil Nadu government to revert the unfilled 151 NEET SS seats to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) by July 29, 2026 and asked the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) to complete the NEET SS 2025 counselling process within two weeks.

NMC Guidelines on Aesthetic Surgery, Hair Transplants Strengthen Patient Safety: Health Ministry informs Parliament
The Guidelines on Aesthetic Surgery and Hair Transplant Procedures, issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on 20.09.2022, ensure the safety of patients during cosmetic surgeries, the Union Minister of State for Health, Smt Anupriya Patel, said in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
The Minister's response was based on a query raised by Parliament member Dr Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade, who sought to ask whether the Government has examined regulatory reforms in the United Kingdom and Australia governing cosmetic surgery, and whether it proposes to establish a dedicated framework based on risk classification of procedures to strengthen patient safety.
