NEET Leak Row: BJP Says Opposition Politicising Issue Despite Centre's Strict Measures

Treasury bench MPs on Thursday defended the Centre's handling of the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and criticised the Opposition for politicising the issue during the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi highlighted the government's response, including talks between Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh with protesting students and activist Sonam Wangchuk, the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the setting up of a fast-track court, and the constitution of a high-level task force headed by Nandan Nilekani to recommend examination reforms, reports TOI.

Supporting the Bill, Trivedi said it was based on three principles—a student-centric approach, a secure examination system, and stringent action against paper leaks. He noted that the proposed law provides for tougher punishment, time-bound investigations, and faster trials to deter examination fraud. JDU MP Sanjay Jha backed the legislation, urging that the issue should not be viewed through a political lens. Shiv Sena's Milind Deora suggested students should be involved in the reform process by giving them a formal role in the consultations.

Calling Registered AYUSH Doctors 'Quacks' is Unlawful; AMAI Welcomes NCISM Circular

The Ayurveda Medical Association of India (AMAI) has welcomed a circular issued by the National Commission for Indian Systems of Medicine (NCISM), which clarifies that qualified and registered practitioners of the Indian Systems of Medicine are legally recognised medical practitioners and that referring to them as"quacks" or "fake doctors" is unlawful.

In a statement, the AMAI State Committee said the circular is a strong warning to vested interests attempting to discredit doctors practising Indian systems of medicine, including those holding recognised qualifications such as Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), who are duly registered with the statutory medical council and authorised to practise under the law, reports UNI.

Karnataka to Hold HIV Camps in Colleges After 7,000 Youths Test Positive

Karnataka has stepped up its HIV prevention efforts after official data revealed a rise in infections among young people. According to the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS), more than 7,000 students and young adults aged 18-25 years have tested HIV positive. The State Government has now directed government, aided and private degree and engineering colleges to organise integrated HIV awareness and health camps offering awareness sessions, confidential counselling and voluntary HIV testing with informed consent. Officials said the initiative aims to improve early diagnosis, reduce stigma and connect people living with HIV to timely treatment.

The latest figures show that the number of people aged 15-35 years living with HIV in Karnataka has increased from around 49,000 in 2023-24 to nearly 83,000 in 2025-26. Overall, about 2.6 lakh people are estimated to be living with HIV in the state, with over 2.05 lakh currently receiving free antiretroviral therapy (ART). Health authorities estimate that nearly 54,000 people may still be unaware of their HIV status. Officials said the college-based campaign is intended to encourage voluntary testing, identify undiagnosed infections early and improve access to treatment, rather than suggesting HIV transmission is occurring within college campuses, according to a Brut report.
