Overview
Here are the top health news for the day:
(i) In case a Maternity Leave has already been availed by a female Central Government servant and her leave continues till the date of expiry of a child soon after birth/stillbirth, the maternity leave already availed till death of the child may be converted into any other kind of leave available in her leave account without insisting for a medical certificate and a Special Maternity Leave of 60 days may be granted from the date of expiry of a child soon after birth / Stillbirth.
(ii) In case the maternity leave has not been availed by a female Central Government servant, 60 days of Special Maternity Leave may be granted from the date of expiry of a child soon after birth/stillbirth.
(iii) The condition for death of a child soon after birth may be defined as up to 28 days after birth.
(iv) A baby born with no signs of life at or after 28 weeks of gestation may be defined as Stillbirth
Holding an eye hospital, its operating Ophthalmologist and anesthetist guilty of medical negligence while conducting squint eye correction surgery, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has recently directed them to pay Rs1 crore compensation to the parents of a patient, who died on the operation table.
The top consumer court held the anesthetist guilty for not warning the operating surgeon about possible reaction from a medication and also held the hospital vicariously liable for the death of the patient 22 years ago.
Punjab implements new rule, only domicile candidates eligible for MBBS, BDS admissions under state quota seats
Taking note of the controversies and litigations over bona fide Punjab residents, the State Government has implemented a new rule as per which only the domicile candidates of Punjab will be eligible for the State quota MBBS/BDS seats in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
The confirmation in this regard has come from the Registrar of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), IAS officer Dr Nirmal Ouseppachan who told The Tribune, "As per the new eligibility condition, only those candidates shall be considered for the state quota who have mentioned 'Punjab' as their residence state in their NEET-UG form."

NMC gives permission for adding 4 MD psychiatry seats at MGM medical college
The Postgraduate seats in the Psychiatry department of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, Indore is going to increase since the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod for adding four seats to the department and therefore taking the total number of MD Psychiatry seats from six to ten.
Issuing a letter of intent in this regard, the Apex medical education regulatory body NMC has allowed the MGM authorities for admitting 10 students from the current academic session i.e. 2022-2023.
