The Madras High Court has granted permission to a NEET-UG applicant with special needs to wear a diaper and change it as required during the exam on May 5. The decision came during the hearing of a case involving a 19-year-old MBBS aspirant who suffered facial injuries from scalding by hot oil at the age of four and is currently undergoing treatment for LETM/NMO/spectrum disorder/neurogenic bladder. Her doctor confirmed her lack of urine control, necessitating continuous diaper use with frequent changes.
Despite her requests to the National Testing Agency (NTA) and National Medical Commission being ignored, she sought recourse in the high court. Justice G R Swaminathan emphasized the petitioner's legitimate concerns, citing instances of excessive frisking during exams, particularly affecting girls. He highlighted the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, stating that denying the petitioner necessary facilities would amount to discrimination prohibited by Article 14 of the Constitution.
