Overview
The news about Covid has resurfaced, with a new variant named EG.5.1 originating from the highly transmissible Omicron variant, causing concern among health officials in the UK. This variant, nicknamed Eris, was first detected in the UK last month and is currently spreading rapidly throughout the country.
According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the EG.5.1 variant now accounts for one in seven new Covid cases, making up 14.6% of the total cases in the UK, making it the second most prevalent variant.
