Parliamentary panel recommends evaluation of vaccines, more research for booster dose

Overview
As with the emergence of a new Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, speculations are being made about the possibility of a new wave of the pandemic, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health, has recently recommended that evaluation of the efficacy of COVID vaccines is necessary and more research on the part on the part of the Government is required for examining the need for booster doses for containing the new strain of the virus.
While presenting its report before the Parliament on Friday, the panel referred to the growing concerns regarding the new strain developing immunoescape mechanism and opined the need for critically addressing the issue.
"With the incidence of highly mutated Omicron (B.1.1.529) strain of Covid virus, the committee strongly believes that the efficacy of the vaccines must be evaluated. The concerns with regards to the new strain developing immunoescape mechanism need to be critically addressed," the Parliamentary Committee was quoted stating in its report by PTI.
