In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court issued a directive on Monday, instructing the West Bengal government to constitute a medical board for the evaluation of a rape survivor's pregnancy, who is seeking termination due to the distressing incident.

The petitioner, a 27-year-old woman, is currently between 20 to 24 weeks into her pregnancy.

The petitioner's lawyer submitted before the court that she is suffering from grave mental trauma and as such the court may permit the medical termination of the pregnancy which was stated to be between 20 and 24 weeks. Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya directed the state government to form a medical board to examine the condition of the 27-year-old petitioner.
