Tamil Nadu Assembly to Pass Resolutions Opposing NEET, Seeks Changes in Central Laws - Video

Tamil Nadu is set to pass a separate resolution in the Legislative Assembly opposing NEET and urging the Centre to abolish the uniform entrance exam for undergraduate medical admissions. Health Minister Ma Subramanian will move the resolution, which argues that NEET affects social justice and equality, particularly for rural, Tamil-medium and economically disadvantaged students. It also criticises the growing dependence on costly coaching centres and the pressure placed on students. The resolution cites repeated paper leaks and examination irregularities, including the cancellation and re-examination of NEET-UG 2026, saying these incidents have caused distress among lakhs of students and weakened public confidence.

The Assembly will urge the Centre to amend relevant central laws, including the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, to discontinue NEET. Tamil Nadu has proposed using Class 12 marks for medical admissions in the state. The resolution also recalls the Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill, 2021, which sought exemption from NEET but has not received presidential assent. The move renews Tamil Nadu's long-standing opposition to the national medical entrance examination, according to an India Today report.
