Vitamin B12-Based Treatment May Help Fight Deadly Brain Cancer, Researchers Report
A modified form of vitamin B12 may offer a promising new strategy for treating glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer with limited treatment options, according to a pilot study published in Oncoscience. Researchers found that the experimental compound was able to cross the blood-brain barrier, accumulate inside tumors, and enhance the effects of existing therapies.
Glioblastoma remains one of the deadliest brain cancers, with most patients surviving less than 15 months despite surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. A major challenge is the blood-brain barrier, which prevents many drugs from reaching tumor tissue.
The researchers investigated nitrosylcobalamin (NO-Cbl), a modified vitamin B12 compound that releases nitric oxide. Using laboratory experiments, cancer cell analyses, and rat models of glioblastoma, they evaluated whether NO-Cbl could reach brain tumors and improve treatment response.
The results showed that NO-Cbl successfully crossed the blood-brain barrier after systemic administration and accumulated preferentially within glioblastoma tissue. The compound also remained active inside tumors for at least 24 hours, while levels in normal tissues declined more rapidly. This suggests that NO-Cbl may selectively deliver nitric oxide to the tumor microenvironment.
In laboratory studies using human glioblastoma cells, combining NO-Cbl with the chemotherapy drug temozolomide or the experimental cancer therapy TRAIL produced significantly greater suppression of tumor cell growth than either treatment alone. The researchers observed synergistic effects across multiple dose ranges, indicating that the combinations worked better together than expected.
Although the findings are encouraging, the researchers emphasize that this was an early-stage pilot study. Further studies are needed to confirm the results, optimize dosing, and evaluate the compound in additional brain tumor models before it can be tested in clinical trials.

Researchers Link Okra Supplements to Better Cholesterol Levels in Diabetes
Okra supplements may help improve several cardiovascular risk factors in people with prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and diabetic kidney disease, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis published in Nutrition & Diabetes. The findings suggest that okra could serve as a low-cost dietary supplement alongside standard medical treatment, although it is not a replacement for prescription medications.
Researchers analyzed data from 10 clinical studies, including nine randomized controlled trials and one quasi-experimental study, involving adults with diabetes-related conditions. The studies evaluated various okra preparations, including powders, extracts, and seed formulations, at daily doses ranging from 3 to 20 grams over periods of two weeks to three months.
The pooled results showed that participants taking okra supplements experienced significant reductions in several markers linked to cardiovascular disease. Total cholesterol decreased by an average of 14.16 mg/dL, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by 8.51 mg/dL, and triglycerides by 15.43 mg/dL. Okra supplementation also lowered diastolic blood pressure by 1.17 mmHg and reduced levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation.
Researchers found that lower doses of 4 grams or less appeared more effective for reducing total and LDL cholesterol, while higher doses showed greater effects on triglycerides. Interventions lasting longer than two months produced stronger improvements in lipid levels. However, no significant overall effect was observed for systolic blood pressure or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
The researchers suggest that okra's soluble fiber, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds may help lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and support blood pressure regulation.
Despite the encouraging findings, the authors caution that the evidence is based on relatively small, heterogeneous studies conducted exclusively in Asian populations. Larger, long-term clinical trials are needed to confirm the benefits, assess safety, and determine how okra supplements interact with conventional diabetes medications.

New Study Questions Brain Health Benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oil Supplements
High-dose fish oil supplements increased omega-3 levels in the brain but did not improve memory, thinking abilities, or protect against brain shrinkage associated with Alzheimer's disease, according to a two-year clinical trial published in eBioMedicine.
Researchers from Keck Medicine of USC enrolled 365 adults aged 55 to 80 who rarely ate fish and were considered at increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. Nearly half of the participants carried the APOE4 gene, the strongest known genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a daily supplement containing 2,000 mg of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, or a placebo.
To determine whether the supplement reached the brain, researchers measured DHA levels in cerebrospinal fluid. After six months, DHA levels had increased by an average of 17%, confirming that the omega-3 fatty acid successfully crossed into the brain.
Despite this increase, participants taking DHA showed no significant improvements in memory or cognitive performance compared with those receiving the placebo. Brain scans also revealed no reduction in shrinkage of the hippocampus, a region essential for memory that commonly deteriorates during aging and Alzheimer's disease.
The researchers believe the findings suggest that simply increasing brain DHA levels through supplements may not be enough to preserve cognitive function. They propose that omega-3s may be more beneficial when consumed as part of an overall healthy dietary pattern, such as the Mediterranean diet, rather than as isolated supplements.
While the study found no evidence that fish oil supplements prevent Alzheimer's-related brain changes, the researchers emphasize that regular exercise, quality sleep, a balanced diet, and maintaining overall health remain the most effective evidence-based strategies for supporting long-term brain health.
