Lancet Review Finds mRNA Vaccines Safe and Highly Effective Against Infectious Diseases

Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines are safe and highly effective against infectious diseases, according to a comprehensive review published in The Lancet. Researchers analyzed evidence from billions of vaccine doses administered worldwide and concluded that the benefits of mRNA vaccines far outweigh their risks, reinforcing their role as a major advancement in modern medicine.

The review, led by scientists from the University of British Columbia, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and collaborating institutions, examined data from clinical trials and real-world safety monitoring.

The findings showed that mRNA vaccines provide strong protection against severe illness across different age groups, including children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

Unlike traditional vaccines, mRNA vaccines do not contain live or inactive viruses. Instead, they deliver temporary genetic instructions that prompt cells to produce a harmless viral protein, training the immune system to recognize and fight future infections. Researchers emphasized that the mRNA never enters the cell nucleus, does not alter DNA, and naturally breaks down after completing its task.

The review found that booster doses improve and extend protection, particularly as new virus variants emerge. While mild side effects such as injection-site pain, fatigue, and fever are common, serious adverse events remain rare. Cases of myocarditis have been reported more frequently in younger males, but researchers noted that the risk is very low and substantially outweighed by the vaccines' ability to prevent severe disease, hospitalization, and death.

Beyond infectious diseases, scientists are exploring mRNA technology for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), personalized cancer vaccines, and other RNA-based therapies. The authors also emphasized the need to expand vaccine manufacturing in low- and middle-income countries through technology transfer, local production, and stronger regulatory systems to improve global access and prepare for future health emergencies.

Indian Researchers Develop Novel Technique to Target and Destroy Oral Cancer Cells

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), in collaboration with clinicians from MS Ramaiah Medical College and Hospitals, have developed a promising approach that uses low-frequency ultrasound to selectively destroy oral cancer cells while leaving healthy cells largely unharmed. The findings, published in Materials Today Bio, offer a potential non-invasive strategy for treating oral cancer, which remains a major health challenge in India.

The study found that oral cancer cells are especially sensitive to moderate mechanical stimulation produced by ultrasound. This vulnerability is linked to lower levels of Tropomyosin 2.1, a protein that helps normal cells detect and withstand mechanical stress. Because cancer cells have reduced amounts of this protein, exposure to ultrasound triggers their death, whereas healthy oral epithelial cells are able to tolerate the same treatment.

Beyond killing cancer cells, ultrasound also reduced their ability to migrate and invade surrounding tissues, both of which are key processes in cancer progression. Using a three-dimensional co-culture model that closely mimics the human oral tumor environment, researchers observed that ultrasound disrupted the dense protective barriers surrounding tumors.

These barriers often prevent chemotherapy drugs and immune cells from penetrating deep into tumors, reducing treatment effectiveness. By weakening these defenses, ultrasound could potentially improve the delivery of existing therapies and enhance anti-cancer immune responses.

The researchers emphasized that ultrasound is already an established, non-invasive medical technology, making it an attractive candidate for future cancer treatment. Unlike conventional approaches that primarily rely on drugs or heat, this method targets the mechanical weakness of cancer cells.

Importantly, the study used patient-derived tumor samples rather than standard laboratory cell lines, making the findings more representative of real-world disease. The team now plans to test the approach in advanced preclinical models and investigate whether combining ultrasound with current treatments can further improve drug delivery, treatment response, and outcomes for patients with oral cancer.

Researchers Map Daily Links Between Exercise, Sleep, Diet and Emotional Well-Being

A new study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being suggests that healthy lifestyle habits and emotional well-being are closely connected in daily life, although the patterns vary considerably from person to person. The findings could help pave the way for more personalized lifestyle interventions rather than one-size-fits-all recommendations.

Researchers recruited 79 adults in the United States, aged 18 to 80 years, who completed daily surveys over 70 consecutive days. Participants reported their sleep quality and duration, physical activity, fruit and vegetable intake, alcohol and caffeine consumption, as well as time spent relaxing, socializing, enjoying nature, pursuing hobbies, and watching television or movies. They also rated their positive and negative emotions each day.

Using advanced network modeling, the researchers examined how these lifestyle behaviors and emotional experiences clustered both between individuals and within the same individual over time.

The analysis showed that people who were generally more physically active also tended to spend more time in nature and consume more fruits and vegetables. On a day-to-day basis, higher physical activity was linked with healthier eating, while social engagement was associated with both alcohol consumption and time spent in nature.

Positive emotions were connected with several healthy behaviors on the same day, including greater fruit and vegetable intake, longer sleep, social interaction, relaxation, spending time outdoors, and engaging in hobbies. In contrast, negative emotions were associated with poorer sleep quality and reduced time spent on hobbies or watching television.

Importantly, personalized analyses revealed substantial differences between participants, indicating that lifestyle and emotional patterns are highly individual. Because the study relied on self-reported data from a small, non-clinical sample, the findings are preliminary. However, they highlight the potential value of tailoring lifestyle interventions to each person's unique behavioral and emotional patterns.
