Single Injection Shows Promise in Reversing Osteoarthritis Symptoms Within Weeks: Study

What if damaged joints could heal themselves instead of being replaced?

A team of researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder, CU Anschutz, and Colorado State University has developed two experimental regenerative therapies that could transform osteoarthritis treatment by helping damaged joints repair themselves. The therapies have shown remarkable success in animal studies, restoring joint health within weeks instead of simply managing pain.

Osteoarthritis affects nearly one in six adults over the age of 30 worldwide and occurs when cartilage gradually wears away, leading to pain, stiffness, reduced mobility, and progressive joint damage. Current treatments mainly focus on relieving symptoms, while severe cases often require joint replacement surgery.

The first therapy uses an injectable drug delivery system that slowly releases an FDA-approved medication directly into the affected joint over several months. The second approach involves engineered biomaterials delivered through a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure. Once in place, the material hardens and attracts the body's own progenitor cells to regenerate damaged cartilage and bone.

In animal studies, the injectable therapy restored osteoarthritic joints to a healthy state within four to eight weeks. The biomaterial treatment also achieved complete regeneration of damaged cartilage and bone defects. Researchers observed similar regenerative effects in human cells collected from patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.

Scientists believe these therapies could one day offer a one-time, minimally invasive treatment for early osteoarthritis and localized joint injuries, potentially delaying or even eliminating the need for joint replacement surgery. If future studies continue to show positive results, human clinical trials could begin within the next 18 months.

New Research Links Creatine Supplementation to Improved Depression Outcomes

Could a popular gym supplement also help improve depression? A new systematic review published in Brain Medicine suggests creatine may have potential mental health benefits by supporting the brain's energy production, but current evidence remains too limited to recommend it as a treatment.

Researchers from the University of Ottawa reviewed five randomized controlled trials involving 238 participants with major depressive disorder or bipolar depression. Across the studies, 126 participants received creatine while 112 received a placebo. Because the trials differed in design, the researchers assessed each individually rather than combining the results.

Two studies involving women with major depressive disorder reported significant improvements. In one trial, participants taking five grams of creatine daily alongside the antidepressant escitalopram experienced greater reductions in depression symptoms and higher remission rates than those receiving escitalopram with a placebo. Another study found that combining creatine with cognitive behavioral therapy produced greater symptom improvement than therapy alone.

However, the remaining three trials found no meaningful benefit. Creatine did not improve symptoms in people with treatment-resistant depression, adolescent girls with depression, or individuals with bipolar depression. Researchers also noted that two participants with bipolar disorder developed hypomania or mania after taking creatine, suggesting the supplement may not be suitable for everyone.

Scientists believe creatine could influence depression because the brain requires large amounts of energy, and creatine helps regenerate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule that powers cells. It may also affect mood-related neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, although these mechanisms remain theoretical.

The authors stress that the available evidence is inconsistent and based on relatively small studies, many involving mostly women. Larger, longer-term clinical trials are needed before creatine can be considered a reliable treatment for depression.

Premature Gray Hair Linked to Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies in New Study

Going gray in your 20s? Your diet—not just your genes—could be part of the reason. While genetics remains the biggest factor behind premature graying, growing research suggests that certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies may also contribute to the loss of natural hair color. The findings were published in the International Journal of Trichology.

Among the nutrients attracting the most attention is vitamin B12. Studies have found that people with premature graying often have significantly lower blood levels of vitamin B12 than those whose hair retains its natural pigment. Research has also shown that about 55% of people with pernicious anemia—a condition that prevents proper vitamin B12 absorption—develop gray hair before the age of 50, compared with around 30% of people without the condition.

Vitamin B12 is not the only nutrient under investigation. Researchers have also linked lower vitamin D and calcium levels with premature graying. A case-control study conducted in India reported that people with early gray hair were more likely to have deficiencies in both nutrients, although genetic factors also played an important role.

Copper may also influence hair pigmentation because it is required to produce tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for making melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. Low folic acid levels have similarly been associated with premature graying, while evidence linking copper deficiency remains less consistent. Iron has also been investigated due to its role in melanin production, but studies have produced mixed results.

Experts emphasize that premature graying is a complex condition influenced by multiple factors, including genetics, oxidative stress, thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, smoking, and nutrition. Although vitamin and mineral deficiencies are unlikely to be the sole cause, correcting deficiencies may help support healthy hair pigmentation in some individuals.

People experiencing unusually early graying are encouraged to consult a healthcare professional rather than self-prescribing supplements, as proper testing can identify underlying nutritional or medical conditions.
