Indian Scientists Develop Light-Driven Nanobots for Promising Breast Cancer Treatment
Cancer treatment just got a sci-fi upgrade: tiny light-guided nanobots are taking aim at breast tumors.
Indian researchers have developed light-activated multifunctional nanobots designed to target breast cancer cells with high precision, potentially offering a more localized alternative to conventional chemotherapy. The technology was developed by scientists at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, in collaboration with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai. The findings were published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.
Unlike conventional chemotherapy, which can damage healthy cells alongside cancer cells, the new nanobots are designed to actively move toward tumors and deliver treatment where it is needed.
The researchers created upconversion nanoparticle-based nanobots that respond to near-infrared (NIR) light. When exposed to a 980-nanometre NIR laser, the particles can move toward the light source through a process called phototaxis.
Once activated, they perform multiple functions at once. They generate heat to destroy cancer cells and produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can cause additional damage to tumor cells. Their surfaces are coated with folic acid, helping them recognize folate receptors that are commonly found at higher levels on certain cancer cells.
The combination of photothermal and photodynamic therapy produced stronger tumor-inhibiting effects than either approach alone in laboratory experiments.
The researchers also tested the technology in breast tumor-bearing mice, where the nanobots demonstrated promising anticancer activity.
Another advantage is external control. Because the nanobots can be activated using NIR light and respond to biological conditions such as pH and glutathione levels, researchers believe they could eventually enable highly localized treatment while reducing exposure to healthy tissues.
However, the technology remains at the preclinical stage. Extensive safety testing and human clinical trials will be needed before it can be considered for routine cancer treatment.
Still, these microscopic machines could offer a glimpse of a future where cancer therapy is smarter, more targeted and less damaging to healthy tissue.

Belly Fat May Predict Heart Disease Risk More Accurately Than BMI: Study
Forget the weighing scale for a second—your waistline may be telling your heart a much bigger story.
A new study suggests that where your body stores fat may matter more for cardiovascular health than body mass index (BMI) alone. Published in JACC, the research found that waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) can reveal hidden heart risks that BMI may miss.
BMI is widely used to classify people as normal weight, overweight or obese, but it does not show how fat is distributed. This matters because visceral fat around abdominal organs are more strongly linked to heart disease and diabetes than fat stored beneath the skin.
Researchers from the Cross Cohort Collaboration analyzed data from more than 260,000 people, followed for an average of 20 years. They examined nine cardiovascular outcomes, including heart attack, stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and cardiovascular mortality.
The results exposed important gaps in BMI-based risk assessment. Among people classified as normal weight, 5% had a high waist circumference and 18% had a high waist-to-hip ratio. Among those considered overweight, 39% had high WC and 40% had high WHR.
Crucially, people with normal or overweight BMI but elevated central adiposity had a 15% to 50% higher risk for most of the cardiovascular outcomes studied.
The findings suggest that someone who appears to have a “healthy” BMI could still carry substantial cardiovascular risk if excess fat is concentrated around the abdomen.
Interestingly, some people classified as obese had relatively low waist measurements and did not show significantly higher risks for most outcomes compared with normal-weight individuals with low WC, except for all-cause mortality.
Researchers say clinicians should therefore consider waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio alongside BMI when assessing cardiovascular risk. The study had limitations, including only one measurement of waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio and a lack of detailed data on diet, physical activity and genetic obesity risk.
The takeaway? The scale tells you how much you weigh. Your waist may tell you more about where the risk is hiding.

Study Links Daily Fruit Juice Intake to Lower Depression Symptoms
Could your morning smoothie do more than satisfy your sweet tooth? It might give your mood a little lift, too.
A new randomized trial, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, suggests that adding 100% fruit juice or a smoothie to a diet richer in fruits and vegetables may help support mental well-being, while also making it easier to reach recommended daily fruit and vegetable targets.
Researchers from Newcastle University studied 42 adults who typically consumed two or fewer portions of fruits and vegetables each day. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups for four weeks: a control group that maintained its usual diet, a group encouraged to reach five daily portions using whole fruits and vegetables, and a third group that followed the same advice while also drinking one glass of fruit juice or a smoothie each day.
Both dietary intervention groups successfully increased their fruit and vegetable intake. However, the juice and smoothie group showed an additional benefit: depression scores fell by 2.52 points on a 27-point scale compared with the control group.
Researchers also estimated that both intervention groups increased their daily fiber intake by around 8–10 grams, suggesting that participants continued adding whole, fiber-rich foods rather than simply replacing them with juice.
Importantly, no adverse changes in metabolic health markers were detected in the juice and smoothie group during the four-week study.
The findings add to growing research exploring links between diet and mental health. However, the study was small and short-term, hence, the results cannot prove that fruit juice directly reduces depression or establish long-term health effects.
The researchers suggest that practical, affordable options such as a small serving of 100% fruit juice or a smoothie, alongside whole fruits and vegetables, could help people increase overall fruit and vegetable consumption.
