Belly Fat Combined With Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Higher Mortality: Study

When belly fat and low vitamin D team up, the risk may be more than the sum of its parts.

A study of more than 5,500 adults aged 50 and above has found a striking association between abdominal obesity, vitamin D deficiency and mortality risk. Published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, the research suggests that people with both conditions had a 123% higher risk of death compared with those without either condition.

Researchers from the Federal University of São Carlos in Brazil and University College London analyzed six years of data from 5,520 participants in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

Individually, both conditions were associated with higher mortality. Abdominal obesity increased the risk by 47%, while vitamin D deficiency was associated with up to a 91% higher risk. When the two occurred together, however, the risk more than doubled.

The researchers suggest a possible biological explanation. Excess abdominal fat may trap vitamin D inside fat cells, reducing the amount circulating in the bloodstream. Obesity may also affect enzymes involved in vitamin D metabolism, potentially making the vitamin less available to tissues.

At the same time, aging is accompanied by “inflammaging”—a state of persistent, low-grade inflammation. Vitamin D helps regulate immune activity, so deficiency combined with excess abdominal fat could contribute to a more inflammatory environment, potentially accelerating cardiovascular and metabolic disease as well as muscle loss.

The researchers also point to previous findings linking vitamin D deficiency with reduced muscle strength, slower walking speed and cognitive decline.

Importantly, the study shows an association, not proof that correcting vitamin D deficiency or losing abdominal fat will prevent deaths. Still, the findings highlight why health assessments after 50 may need to look beyond weight alone.

Rather than focusing only on the number on the scale, waist size, nutritional status and vitamin D levels may all offer valuable clues about healthy aging.

Hidden Genetic Heart Risk May Affect One in Five People, Study Finds

That “normal” cholesterol report might be hiding a genetic troublemaker.

A large analysis of more than 20,000 adults suggests that elevated Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), may quietly increase the risk of serious cardiovascular problems—even when traditional cholesterol levels appear acceptable.

Presented at the SCAI 2026 Scientific Sessions and CAIC-ACCI Summit, the findings analyzed participants from three major NIH trials: ACCORD, PEACE and SPRINT. Researchers measured Lipoprotein(a), a cholesterol-carrying particle that resembles LDL but contains an additional protein that can make it more likely to contribute to artery disease.

Unlike ordinary cholesterol, Lipoprotein(a) levels are largely inherited. Around one in five people may have elevated levels, yet most are unaware because high Lipoprotein(a) usually causes no obvious symptoms.

Researchers examined 20,070 participants aged 40 and older, tracking major adverse cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, coronary revascularization and cardiovascular death over a median of nearly four years.

The strongest warning signal appeared in people with Lipoprotein(a) levels of 175 nmol/L or higher. This level was independently associated with a 31% higher risk of major cardiovascular events, a 49% higher risk of cardiovascular death, and a 64% higher risk of stroke. However, researchers found no significant increase in heart-attack risk at this threshold.

The researchers emphasize that Lipoprotein(a) can reveal hidden cardiovascular risk that standard cholesterol testing may miss. Because levels are largely genetic and can be measured with a simple blood test, testing may help identify people who need more aggressive management of other risk factors, particularly LDL cholesterol.

Still, elevated Lipoprotein(a) does not mean a cardiovascular event is inevitable. Researchers say the findings support greater awareness and risk management while targeted Lipoprotein(a) lowering treatments continue to emerge.

Seven-Day Meditation Retreat Linked to Significant Changes in Brain Activity: Study

What if seven days of meditation could leave fingerprints on your biology?

A new study from the University of California San Diego suggests that an intensive seven-day mind-body retreat may do more than simply help people relax. Published in Communications Biology, the research found measurable changes in brain activity, metabolism, immune signaling, neuroplasticity and the body's natural pain-control system.

The study involved 20 healthy adults who completed a residential retreat featuring lectures, around 33 hours of guided meditation and group healing practices. Researchers examined participants before and after the program using brain scans and blood analyses.

After the retreat, brain activity changed in regions involved in internal mental chatter, while laboratory experiments using participants' blood plasma showed signs associated with greater neuroplasticity. Neurons exposed to post-retreat plasma developed longer branches and more connections, although these laboratory findings do not prove that participants' brains underwent the same changes.

The researchers also observed shifts in cellular metabolism and increased levels of endogenous opioids, chemicals naturally produced by the body that help regulate pain. Immune signaling changed in both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory pathways, suggesting a complex biological response rather than a simple reduction in inflammation.

Participants also reported stronger mystical experiences, including feelings of unity and altered consciousness. Greater scores were associated with increased integration between brain regions. Interestingly, researchers noted that some connectivity patterns resembled those previously reported during psychedelic experiences, although meditation and psychedelic drugs are not equivalent.

The findings are intriguing, but the study has important limitations. It was small, involved healthy adults and combined multiple practices, making it impossible to determine which intervention caused the changes. It also remains unclear how long the effects last or whether they translate into clinical benefits.
