Researchers Develop Smart Cancer Drug That Could Reduce Need for Chemotherapy
Scientists in India have developed a promising “smart” cancer drug designed to activate primarily inside cancer cells while limiting damage to healthy tissue.
The findings, published in the ACS Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, represent an early step toward developing cancer treatments that can be switched on specifically within tumors.
The drug, RK-251, was developed through collaborative research led by Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), an autonomous institute under India’s Department of Science & Technology, and Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.
Unlike conventional chemotherapy, which can damage healthy cells along with cancer cells, RK-251 is designed to remain relatively inactive until it reaches an environment characteristic of tumors.
The approach takes advantage of a feature commonly associated with cancer cells: elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). When RK-251 enters a cancer cell with high ROS levels, these molecules trigger the drug to release NBDHEX, a potent anticancer compound.
NBDHEX works by blocking proteins that cancer cells rely on for survival and resistance to treatment. This could potentially allow the drug to attack tumor cells more selectively while reducing unwanted effects on healthy tissue.
In preclinical experiments, RK-251 demonstrated strong anticancer activity against aggressive triple-negative breast cancer cells, while showing substantially less activity against healthy cells.
Researchers also evaluated the drug candidate in zebrafish embryos (Danio rerio). The experiments showed no obvious signs of toxicity and demonstrated the expected fluorescence when ROS were present, providing additional evidence that the ROS-responsive mechanism was functioning as intended.
However, RK-251 remains a preclinical drug candidate. Results from cancer cells and animal models cannot establish whether the drug will be safe or effective in humans. Further laboratory studies, animal testing and eventually carefully controlled clinical trials will be required before it could become a treatment option for patients.

Study Links Antioxidant-Rich Foods to Reduced Cervical Cancer Risk in Women
A recent study published in the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics suggests that women with higher dietary antioxidant intake may have a lower prevalence of cervical cancer.
Researchers analyzed data from 1,044 US women who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2003 and 2018. Among them, 174 had cervical cancer and 870 did not. The investigators assessed participants’ dietary antioxidant intake using the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI), a validated measure based on dietary recall information.
After adjusting for potential factors that could influence cancer risk, researchers found that higher CDAI scores were associated with a lower prevalence of cervical cancer. Each one-unit increase in CDAI was associated with an 11.4% lower prevalence of cervical cancer.
The difference was particularly notable when women were divided into three groups according to their antioxidant intake. Those in the highest CDAI tertile had a 55.8% lower prevalence of cervical cancer compared with women in the lowest tertile.
Further analysis showed a linear inverse association, meaning that cervical cancer prevalence tended to decrease as dietary antioxidant intake increased.
Antioxidants are found naturally in many foods, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. These compounds can help counter oxidative stress, which has been implicated in cellular damage and several disease processes. However, the study does not establish that antioxidants directly prevent cervical cancer.
The researchers emphasized that the findings demonstrate an association rather than a cause-and-effect relationship. Because the analysis was based on observational data and dietary intake was assessed through recall, factors such as overall diet, lifestyle and other health characteristics may have influenced the results.
The authors concluded that dietary antioxidant intake may potentially contribute to cervical cancer prevention, but prospective studies are needed to confirm the association and determine the biological mechanisms involved.

Regular Stair Climbing May Reduce Heart Disease Risk and Boost Longevity: Study
Regularly choosing the stairs instead of the lift may offer meaningful cardiovascular benefits, with new research linking stair climbing to lower risks of heart-related death and overall mortality. The study was published in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs.
Researchers from the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital reviewed evidence from nine studies involving more than 480,000 people aged 35 to 84. Participants included both healthy adults and people with previous cardiovascular disease and were followed for a median of 14 years.
The analysis found that people who regularly climbed stairs had a 39% lower risk of cardiovascular death and a 24% lower risk of death from any cause compared with those who climbed stairs less frequently. Stair climbing was also associated with a lower likelihood of developing serious cardiovascular conditions, including heart attack, stroke and heart failure.
Researchers noted that stair climbing provides a convenient way to add physical activity to everyday routines without requiring dedicated gym sessions. Earlier studies have suggested that even short bouts of stair climbing several times a week can improve cardiorespiratory fitness and cholesterol levels.
One cohort study included in the analysis suggested that climbing around six flights of stairs per day could provide substantial benefits, although researchers stressed that the ideal amount remains uncertain.
The findings are particularly relevant because more than one-quarter of adults worldwide do not meet recommended physical activity levels. Incorporating brief periods of movement into daily routines could therefore provide a practical way to improve cardiovascular health.
However, the study shows an association rather than proof that stair climbing directly prevents death or cardiovascular disease. The researchers also cautioned that stairs may not be suitable for everyone, particularly people with mobility limitations or certain joint conditions.
