Chronic kidney disease and radical cystectomy for bladder cancer related? - Video
Overview
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) describe the fact that kidneys are damaged and aren't capable of filtering blood the way they do. The main risk factors for developing kidney disease are well known such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and a family history of kidney failure. But what about its relation with cancer?
A Study in Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations assessed the impact of chronic kidney disease (CKD) on outcomes after radical cystectomy (RC) in patients with bladder cancer. A total of 1,214 patients who underwent radical cystectomy were included. The Modification of Diet in Renal Disease GFR was calculated and patients were categorized by baseline GFR. Pre-, intra- and postoperative characteristics, oncological outcomes, and 90-day perioperative outcomes were compared.
It was found that Patients with worse chronic kidney disease were older and had significantly worse overall comorbidity . The rates of blood transfusion, 90-day complications and readmissions were higher in patients with worse chronic kidney disease. Patients with worse had worse overall survival. Hence, researchers concluded that chronic kidney disease was prevalent in patients undergoing radical cystectomy.
