5-year-old girl undergoes awake brain surgery at AIIMS Delhi - Video

A remarkable medical feat occurred at AIIMS Delhi as a five-year-old girl from Greater Noida underwent an awake craniotomy for a left perisylvianintraaxial brain tumor, becoming the world's youngest child to undergo this procedure. Akshita Yadav is reported to be recovering well post-surgery and is expected to be discharged soon. The unique aspect of this case is the patient's age, as such surgeries have typically been attempted in older children.

During the complex surgery, the child remained awake and alert to safeguard critical brain areas. Neurosurgeon Prof Deepak Gupta highlighted the patient's bravery and cooperation throughout the three-hour procedure. Akshita's parents had prepared her mentally for the surgery, showing her videos and familiar objects before the operation. Ice-cold saline was used on the brain surface to prevent seizures.
