All about BDS in India: Full Form, Admissions, Colleges, Syllabus, Fees, Eligibility
Bachelor of Dental Surgery, or BDS, is an undergraduate course for students aspiring to work as dentists in India or abroad. They do it after completing their 10+2 exam or any other equivalent. The full form of BDS is Bachelor of Dental Surgery. This undergraduate course lasts five years and focuses on studying human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, examining, diagnosing, preventing, and treating the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of the oral cavity's diseases, disorders, and conditions.
The course is a full-time program offered at numerous accredited institutions and dental colleges nationwide. Admission to this program is accomplished through the National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted exam - NEET UG Entrance Examination, which is followed by counselling based on the exam results administered by the DGHS/MCC/state officials. Dental education is regulated by the Dental Council of India (DCI).
The fee for pursuing BDS varies from accredited institutes/dental colleges and may range from Rs. 20,000 to Rs.27 lakhs per year.
After graduation, dentists can join the job market or pursue Master in Dental Surgery (MDS) programs recognised by the DCI. Candidates can work as dentists in private or government hospitals or nursing homes or start clinics. Average starting salary range is from Rs. 3 lakhs to Rs. 9 lakhs per year.
BDS mainly focuses on training and introducing students to the dental sciences and surgeries. The 5-year program involves four years of classroom education and one year of compulsory rotating internship.
What is BDS?
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is a five-year undergraduate program for candidates after completing higher secondary education.
BDS, the branch of medical science dealing with the study, is concerned with diagnosing, treating, and preventing oral cavity diseases. BDS focuses on learning practical and theoretical studies of dentures, dental problems, and surgery. BDS subjects focus on understanding general Human Physiology and Biochemistry, Nutrition, Dietetics, General and Dental Pharmacology, etc.
BDS programs incorporate case studies, group projects, and other forms of action-based learning in addition to traditional lectures.
The required training done by an undergraduate would help the doctor recognise the community's health needs. The student should be capable of handling medical problems and aware of the recent advances in dental sciences.

Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for BDS is defined as a set of rules or minimum prerequisites that aspirants must fulfill to be eligible for admission, which are:
- She or he must turn 17 years old by the 31st of December of the year of admission to the BDS programme.
- He/she has obtained a minimum of marks in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test as prescribed in sub-regulation 5 of Regulation II under the heading "Selection of students:
- To be eligible to take the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, he/she has passed the qualifying examination as under-.
a. After 12 years of school, the higher secondary exam—also known as the Indian School Certificate Examination—equals the 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination. The last two years of study must include English at a level equivalent to the English core course as prescribed by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) after the introduction of the 10+2+3 years of education.
or
- b.The intermediate exam in science administered by an Indian university, board, or other recognised examining organisation, which must contain a practical test in biology, chemistry, and physics as well as English as a subject needed;
or
- c.after clearing either the higher secondary school examination or the pre-university or similar examination, the pre-professional/pre-medical examination with the subjects of Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. English is a required subject in the pre-professional/pre-medical examination, and it will also contain a practical test in biology, chemistry, and physics;
or
- Biology, chemistry, and physics in the first year of a three-year degree programme at an accredited university, along with a practical test in three subjects, provided the test is a "University Examination" and the aspirant has passed the 10+2 with English at a level equivalent to a core course;
or
e. B.Sc. examination of an Indian university provided that he or she passed the B.Sc. examination with at least two of the following subjects: chemistry, physics, and biology (botany, zoology), and further that he or she passed the earlier qualifying examination with the subjects: chemistry, biology, physics, and English.
or
f. Any other test that has been determined to be similar in terms of scope and standards to the intermediate scientific examination offered by an Indian university or board, which includes biology, chemistry, and physics as well as practical exams in all three of those areas as well as English.
Admission Process:
The candidates for admission to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme must complete a number of processes in the correct order. Candidates can view the detailed BDS admissions procedure below:
- Appear for the NEET exam: The NEET-UG or National Eligibility Entrance Test for Undergraduate Courses is a national-level undergrad level examination conducted by the NTA for admission to MBBS/BDS/BAMS/BSMS/BUMS/BHMS and other undergraduate medical courses in approved/recognized medical/Dental /AYUSH and other Colleges/ Deemed Universities /Institutes.
- Complete the requirements: To be qualified for admission to the BDS Course for a given academic year, a candidate must receive at least a 50th percentile score on the "National Eligibility cum-Entrance Test to BDS course" administered during the relevant academic year. The minimum score must be at the 40th percentile for candidates who are members of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. The minimum score for candidates with lower-level locomotor disabilities is at the 45th percentile. The highest score obtained in "The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Admission to the BDS Course" will be used to calculate the percentage.
Common Counselling:
Common counselling is conducted for admission to BDS courses in all dental educational institutions based on the merit list of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) , Government of India (GOI), shall be the designated authority for counselling for the 15% All India Quota seats of the contributing States and for all BDS seats of dental education colleges of the Central Government universities established by the Deemed Universities and an Act of Parliament.
The counselling for admission to BDS courses in a State/Union Territory, including Dental Education Institutions established by the State Government, Universities established by an Act of State/Union TerritoryLegislature, Trust, Society, and Minority Institutions shall be conducted by the state/Union Territory Government.
Fees Structure
The fee structure for BDS varies from accredited institute/Dental colleges. The fees are generally less for Government Institutes and more for private institutes. The average fee structure for BDS is around Rs. 20,000 toRs 27 lakhs per year.
