MLA turns Doctor to perform emergency operation in absence of Civil Surgeon
Mizoram: Dr K Beichhua, an MLA from Mizoram, left everything and listened to his call of duty as a doctor as soon as he came to know when a woman in his constituency required an emergency procedure. Currently an MLA, the passout from Regional Medical College in Imphal immediately decided to carry out the operation when he heard that the surgeon at Saiha district hospital was away on a training programme in Imphal
Hindustan Times reported the incident first, highlighting the emergency case of 35 year old woman with abdominal perforation who had come to the Saiha District hospital
"I was informed that a 35-year old woman was having severe abdominal pain and needed to be operated immediately. The woman's stomach had a large perforation (hole) and if the operation had not been performed, she may have died," Dr Beichhua told Hindustan Times, adding he left his political engagements and rushed to perform the surgery.
While the operation took place on Wednesday, the woman is reported to have recovered from her ordeal
"I visited her on Thursday and she was laughing," Dr Beichhua said.
Dr K Beichhua, a 52-year-old MLA completed his MBBS from Regional Medical college in 1991, post which he practiced as a general practitioner for about 20 years before entering politics and joining the Mizo National Front (MNF) in 2013.
"I have performed hundreds of operations during my career, but the last one was in December 2013 after I got elected as an MLA," he said.
The Saiha civil hospital has seven doctors, but only one surgeon, who was away at a training camp in Imphal when the patient developed complications and required the operation.
