Mumbai: Fortis Mulund performs 34th heart transplant
Mulund: A team of doctors in Fortis Hospital, Mulund conducted 34th heart transplant on a 46 year old female recipient from Andheri in Mumbai. The donation became possible when a 44 year old female patient, admitted in a city hospital, was declared brain dead. The family consented to donate organs of their kin following informed counselling. The donor donated Heart, Kidneys, Liver, Skin and Corneas. The recipient, who was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy, has been on the wait list since last month. The transplant was conducted by Dr Anvay Mulay, Chief of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund in Mumbai.
The donor heart was transported from Jaslok Hospital to Fortis Hospital, Mulund in 24 minutes.The donor was declared brain dead following Intracerebral Bleed and Brain Stem Haemorrhage.Following the consent from the family for organ donation, the Traffic authorities swiftly laid out the roadmap. The harvested heart left the city hospital at 03.11 AM as it reached Fortis Hospital Mulund at 03.35AM. The journey of 28 Kms was covered in 24 Mins.Once it reached the hospital, it was then taken straight to the Operation theatre.
Conducting surgeon Dr Anvay Mulay, Chief of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “The surgery was successful. The patient is now stable &would be kept under observation for next 48 to 72 hours. Organ Donation is such a noble cause, its heartening to see that people have responded so warmly to it. We remain indebted to the donor and to their family. They not only save lives but also enrich the cause every time there is a donation.”
Dr S. Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund said, “People have responded so warmly to this beautiful cause of organ donation. We remain indebted to the donor family.Their support and decision has enabled our team of clinicians to conduct another life-saving transplant surgery.We feel humbled and extremely proud of the donor, a caregiver herself, who continued to enrich lives, even after death.”
