16 New Medical Colleges to come up in UP
Lucknow: With an aim of having at least one medical college in each district, the Uttar Pradesh Government has announced setting up 16 new medical colleges in the State.
The confirmation regarding this came from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself when on December 16 the CM said that the State Government is working on establishing 16 new medical colleges in the state, reports ANI.
"We are working on establishing 16 new medical colleges in the state. Why shouldn't there be medical colleges in every district of the state?" Adityanath said during winter session of the Assembly on Thursday.
Medical Dialogues had reported back in July that with an aim to ramp up the healthcare facilities in Uttar Pradesh and make it a hub for medical education, the State Government was contemplating on framing a policy for setting up medical colleges in 16 districts following the public-private-partnership (PPP) model.
Going ahead with this plan of bringing in more participation for setting up medical colleges in the State, the UP Government last month released Expression of Interest (EOI) ( Instructions to Applicants) for the same.
The document issued by the Directorate General of Medical Education and Training, Government of Uttar Pradesh and titled " EOI For Fiscal and Non-Fiscal Support to Private Sector Entity For Development of Medical College and Hospital in Unserved Districts of Uttar Pradesh," laid down the various criteria and requirements from expected participants who would join the government in opening medical colleges under this project. The document laid down the eligibility criteria, minimum qualification requirement both in terms of financial and technical terms as well as laying down how applications will be scrutinized by the government.
As per the data provided by the MoS Health, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Uttar Pradesh has a total number of 57 medical colleges and among them, 26 medical colleges are run by the Government, and 31 are run by private management.
Meanwhile, under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for "Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals", 27 medical colleges have been approved in Uttar Pradesh and recently the Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated nine of them.
