6,992 MD, MS, Diploma, DM, MCh seats in Maharashtra for 2026-27: NMC seat matrix

Mumbai: Maharashtra has a total of 6,992 postgraduate and super-speciality medical seats for the academic year 2026-27, according to the latest seat matrix released by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The seat matrix includes seats in MD, MS, diploma, DM and MCh courses across medical colleges in the state. Maharashtra has the second-highest number of PG and super-specialty medical seats in the country, after Karnataka.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the NMC released a seat matrix showing a total of 63,177 MD, MS, Diploma, DM and MCh medical seats for the academic year 2026-27. Further, the Apex Medical Commission has clarified that the seat matrix does not include seats related to applications received for an increase in the intake of existing PG courses or for the commencement of new PG courses for the academic year 2026-27.
Among the PG courses, MD General Medicine has 687 seats, making it one of the largest MD courses in the state. MD Anaesthesiology has 668 seats, while MD Paediatrics has 452 seats, MD Pathology has 408 seats, and MD Radio-Diagnosis/Radiology has 400 seats.
Other major MD courses include 279 seats in Community Medicine/Social & Preventive Medicine, 231 in Microbiology, 216 in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy/Dermatology, 170 in Psychiatry, 169 in Pharmacology, 129 in Anatomy, 119 in Respiratory Medicine/Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases and 110 in Physiology.
For MS courses, Maharashtra has 628 seats in General Surgery, 499 in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 445 in Orthopaedics, 291 in Ophthalmology and 212 in Otorhinolaryngology/ENT. There are also 2 MS seats in Traumatology and Surgery.
The state also has diploma seats in several courses. These include 11 seats in Diploma in Anaesthesiology, 4 in Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 1 in Diploma in Ophthalmology, 1 in Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology, 3 in Diploma in Paediatrics, 2 in Diploma in Psychiatry, 3 in Diploma in Public Health and 3 in Diploma in Radiodiagnosis. The seat matrix shows zero seats in Diploma in Hospital Administration.
At the super-speciality level, Maharashtra has seats in both DM and MCh courses. DM Cardiology has 52 seats, followed by 30 seats in DM Medical Oncology, 24 each in DM Critical Care Medicine and DM Interventional Radiology, 23 in DM Medical Gastroenterology, 18 in DM Nephrology, 16 each in DM Neonatology and DM Neurology, 10 each in DM Onco-Pathology and DM Paediatric Oncology, 4 each in DM Endocrinology and DM Neuro-Anaesthesia, and 2 in DM Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology.
Among MCh courses, there are 38 seats in MCh Neurosurgery, 37 in MCh Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 36 in MCh Urology, 29 in MCh Surgical Oncology, 25 in MCh Paediatric Surgery, 23 in MCh Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, 8 each in MCh Gynaecological Oncology and MCh Head and Neck Surgery, 2 in MCh Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery and 2 in MCh Surgical Gastroenterology.
