Around 40 percent Rise in Medical Colleges, 42 percent in MBBS Seats in Last 5 Years
Maharashtra- Union Minister of State for Health Smt. Anupriya Patel recently told the Rajya Sabha that there has been an increase of 39.78% in the number of medical colleges and 41.93% in the number of MBBS seats in states in the last five years.
The minister was asked to respond to a series of questions raised by MPs Bhumare Sandipanrao Asaram and Gyaneshwar Patil, regarding the total number of medical colleges in the country including Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh during the last five years till date, whether there has been an increase in the number of MBBS seats in the country including Maharashtra during the said period and whether the increase in medical colleges and MBBS seats is likely to strengthen the health care system.
In response, MoS Health said the government has increased number of medical colleges and subsequently, the number of MBBS seats in the country. Therefore, in the last 5 years, there is an increase of 39.78% in medical colleges from 558 in 2020-21 to 780 as of now, including 80 medical colleges in Maharashtra and 31 in Madhya Pradesh. Furthermore, there is an increase of 41.93% in the number of MBBS seats from 83,275 in 2020-21 to 1,18,190 as of now, including 11846 MBBS seats in Maharashtra and 5200 MBBS seats in Madhya pradesh.
Along with this, also stated the measures/ steps taken by the Government to strengthen the health care system in India in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, which includes-
1 Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), support has been provided for increase of 4977 MBBS seats in 83 colleges, 4058 PG seats in phase-I in 72 colleges and 4000 PG seats in phase-II in 65 colleges in the country.
2 Under the “Upgradation of Government medical colleges by construction of Super Specialty Blocks” of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme, a total of 75 projects have been approved, of which 71 projects are complete.
3 Under the Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved. Undergraduate courses have started in 19 of these.
4 DNB qualification has been recognized for appointment as teaching faculty to take care of shortage of faculty.
5 Enhancement of age limit for appointment/ extension/ re-employment against posts of teachers/dean/principal/ director in medical colleges upto 70 years.
