Civic body fulfils NMCs pre-condition for setting up PG Medical College, 40 Medical teachers to be recruited soon

Nashik: In the latest update regarding the proposed PG medical college of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), the civic body has signed a MoU with the Nashik-based private medical college for using its infrastructure for teaching the students, which was a pre-condition of the National Medical Commission.

Apart from this, the civic body has also decided to recruit around 40 teaching faculty members, including the dean. The process of recruitment would start soon after the proposal gets the nod of the Apex Medical Regulator, National Medical Commission.

After getting the nod from the Apex Commission, the civic body will apply before the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) for the affiliation of the PG medical college.

The plan for setting up a PG medical college in Nashik has been at place for a couple of years. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in a bid to commence the PG medical college and hospital, Nashik Municipal Corporation was planning to augment its existing new Bytco hospital by adding two more storeys to the existing building.

It was decided that the PG medical college would be affiliated to the Mumbai based autonomous education institute- College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS). Although the plans for this medical college had been old, it had to be postponed due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier this year, the apex medical regulator, NMC had set a pre-condition for the Nashik Municipal Corporation for setting up the proposed post-graduate medical college at the Bytco Hospital.

As per the condition by the Apex medical body, the Nashik civic body needs to tie up with a local medical college for obtaining initial permission from NMC to run the PG medical college. Such a pre-condition has been brought in place by NMC because the civic body does not any undergraduate medical college of its own.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, fulfilling the pre-condition of the National Medical Commission, the civic body has now signed an MoU with the Nashik-based private medical college for using its infrastructure to teach the students of its proposed postgraduate (PG) medical college.

While commenting on the matter, Dr Babusaheb Nagargoje, the medical superintendent of NMC told the daily, "The civic body and the private medical college in Nashik city have reached an understanding on this issue. We will be signing the formal agreement shortly."

"We will now approach the medical education regulator and submit a copy of the MoU with an application," he added.

After getting the nod from the Apex Medical Regulator, the proposal for the PG medical college would be sent to MUHS. The University will give its nod after inspecting the facilities.

TOI adds that the civic body has decided to recruit around 40 teaching faculty members, including the dean, for the proposed institute. The process of recruitment in the posts of professors, assistant professors etc. would start after getting the nod from the Apex Commission.

The sources in the NMC health department informed that the civic body has plans of admitting 28 students every year for its diploma and degree courses in around 10 disciplines including surgery, medicine, orthopaedics, gynaecology etc.

"But it would depend upon the regulator about the seats it sanctions for the proposed PG medical college," the officials informed the daily.

Apart from helping the state get more specialised doctors, the project will also be beneficial for the civic body in treatment of patients.
