Aspirants from rural areas and neighbouring districts will have access to the dental college. It will not only provide quality oral health and treatment to people in rural areas, but also boosts dentists' careers.
Last year, Health minister Ma Subramanian said that their department was working towards opening TN’s third government dental college with an intake of 50 students, by next academic year. Therefore, the new Pudukkottai dental college is the the third government dental college in the state and the second to be affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.
The Government of Tamil Nadu had applied to the Dental Council of India seeking permission to conduct admissions. Following which the officials of the Council visited the college last month. After inspecting the premises, the DCI decided to give a nod to the new dental college.
According to the data shared by TOI, from the Dental Council of India, the apex body regulating dental practice and education, show there are 31 colleges (excluding the new college in Pudukottai) in Tamil Nadu. This includes 21 dental colleges under the state medical university.
The state will surrender 37 BDS seats through the all-India quota during medical and dental admissions, while the remaining 213 seats will be added to the state's seat matrix.
