Eight new medical colleges coming up in Telangana: State Gives Administrative Nod, sanctions Rs 1479 crore
Hyderabad: In a major boost to the medical education in Telangana, the State Health and Family Welfare Department has given the administrative sanction for setting up eight new medical colleges in the State with 100 MBBS seats each.
Already the State has sanctioned Rs 1479 crore for this purpose and also to upgrade the attached government general hospitals in the State.
These new medical colleges will be established in eight districts of the State including Rajanna Siricilla, Vikarabad, Khammam, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Asifabad and Jangaon.
While the new medical colleges would be constructed by the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department, the State has given the responsibility of upgrading, procurement of medical infrastructure, diagnostic and hospital equipment and furniture with Telangana State Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSMSIDC).
The Government's nod for these new medical colleges are a part of the State's initial plan for setting up 16 medical colleges in two phases. Medical Dialogues had reported earlier this year that the State Government had announced setting up 8 new medical colleges in 2022 and a few more in the year 2023.

Such announcements had been made by the Finance Minister, Harish Rao in his budget speech at the state legislative assembly session. The government had announced that a medical college will be established in every district over the next two years. During calendar year 2022, eight new medical colleges will come up. During 2023, new medical colleges would be established in the remaining eight districts, the minister had said.
In the first phase of this plan, the Government had proposed to set up eight new medical colleges at Ramagundam, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool, Mahabubabad, Kothagudem, Jagtial, Mancherial, and Sangareddy.
As per the latest media report by Telangana Today, now the State Government has given its administrative nod for setting up eight new medical colleges with 100 MBBS seats each and for this, the Government has already sanctioned Rs 1,479 crore.
The Government's nod is not only for establishing new medical colleges but it also plans to upgrade the attached government general hospitals. The State has given the responsibility in this regard to TSMSIDC.
Until now, these attached government hospitals came under the jurisdiction of the Telangana Vaidya Vidhan Parishad (TVVP). However, now, the Government has transferred the administrative control of these GMCs to the Director of Medical Education (DME).
