Indian Medical students allegedly assaulted at Iran University hostel

New Delhi: A shocking incident has been reported from Iran, where two Indian medical students studying at Islamic Azad University in Tehran were allegedly assaulted and threatened by two other students from the 6th semester. One of the students allegedly suffered a head injury after being attacked with a weapon.
Feeling scared and helpless, the assaulted students recorded a video at around 2 am outside their dormitory, describing the incident. In the video, they said that despite informing the university authorities, no strict action was taken against the accused students.
Condemning the attack, the All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) sought urgent intervention from the Indian High Commission in Iran and demanded a fair inquiry. However, a day later, AIMSA stated in a press release that the university and the Indian Embassy had addressed the matter promptly.

The incident came to public notice after the two Indian students shared the video, stating that they were attacked by fellow Indian students from Jammu and Kashmir. They alleged that they were assaulted with weapons and also threatened.
Without showing their faces, one student displayed the injury marks on the other student. He said that they had submitted complaints to the university and also registered an FIR.
“The students who attacked us have several FIRs registered against them earlier, but no action was taken. A few weeks ago, they also assaulted a female student. We had complained about that incident as well, but the university only issued a warning. Neither the police nor the university took strict action,” the student said in the video.
In a letter to the Indian High Commission in Tehran, AIMSA Vice President Dr Mohammad Momin Khan requested urgent intervention and said that the affected students were under severe mental stress and feared for their safety.
"It has been reported to us that certain Indian students were physically attacked and threatened by another student from the 6th semester, despite the fact that a formal complaint had already been registered with the concerned hospital authorities prior to the incident. The occurrence of such an attack even after official reporting reflects a serious lapse in ensuring student safety and campus discipline. Such incidents not only endanger the well-being of Indian nationals abroad but also create an atmosphere of insecurity that adversely impacts their academic and professional pursuits." he said.
Dr Khan urged the High Commission to take up the matter with the university and local authorities, ensure the immediate safety of Indian students, conduct a fair and impartial inquiry, and take strict action against those responsible to prevent such incidents in the future.
A day later, the association issued a press release thanking the Islamic Azad University and the Embassy for addressing the matter with the utmost seriousness, responsibility, and professionalism.
"We especially acknowledge the embassy for its swift and timely intervention. The university's security department acted promptly and efficiently to resolve the issue faced by our students, reflecting a strong commitment to student safety, welfare, and academic excellence. The timely intervention and effective measures taken by the university authorities ensured that the situation was brought under control without any delay," stated the press release.
The association stated that the students are now safe and have no issues at present. The matter between the students was resolved promptly through the proactive efforts of the university security department.
"The students have expressed satisfaction with the support, responsiveness, and cooperation extended by the university management. AIMSA appreciates the university's dedication to maintaining a safe, positive, and supportive academically environment and acknowledges their continued commitment to the well-being of all students," said the association.
