Major Boost to Andhra Pradesh, 3 new medical colleges to be built, 3 to be upgraded

New Delhi: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Andhra Pradesh, the Minister of State, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar has informed the parliament on Tuesday that three new medical colleges are coming up in the State and three existing medical colleges have been approved for up-gradation.

Referring to the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for 'Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals', MoS Health pointed out that three new medical colleges are coming up at Piduguralla, Paderu, and Machilipatnam.

The Minister further informed that another three medical colleges have been approved for up-gradation under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY)

This information was provided by the Minister while responding to a bunch of questions related to the details of existing medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh. The questions further included queries regarding the list of medical colleges shortlisted for up-gradation under PMSSY and if any new medical colleges were coming up in the State.

Replying to these queries, MoS Health stated, "As informed by National Medical Commission (NMC), there are 13 Government medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh."

The list includes Government Medical College, Anantapur, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Vijayawada, Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, Guntur Medical College, Guntur, Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada, S V Medical College, Tirupati, Government Siddhartha Medical College, Vijaywada, Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool, SVIMS - Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women, Tirupati, ACSR Government Medical College Nellore, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Ongole, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Srikakulam, and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Kadapa.

Apart from this, the Minister further informed, "Three medical colleges have been approved for up-gradation under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in Andhra Pradesh at (i) Sri Venkateshwara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati, (ii) Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada and (iii) Govt. Medical College, Anantapur."

Further providing details regarding the new medical colleges that are coming up in the State, the Minister stated, "The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for 'Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals'. Under the Scheme, 3 new medical colleges have been approved in the State of Andhra Pradesh at Piduguralla, Paderu, and Machilipatnam."
