Gujarat HC restores PG medical aspirant's candidature after 0.09 percent typo in NEET PG form, imposes Rs 25k fine

Ahmedabad: Granting relief to a postgraduate medical aspirant, the Gujarat High Court has directed the admission committee for professional postgraduate medical education courses to allow the aspirant to participate in the NEET PG admissions after he made a mistake while filling out the form.
During the form fill-up process, the concerned candidate made an error in calculating his aggregate marks. He inadvertently entered his MBBS aggregate percentage as "66.23%" instead of the correct "66.32%" while filling up the application form. As a result of this, the admission committee cancelled his candidature.
Following this, the student approached the High Court bench and sought relief. As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the counsel for the petitioner argued that the error was a minor mathematical mistake and it was not an attempt to misrepresent his qualifications.
On the other hand, the admission committee opposed the plea, contending that the rules were framed to prevent any kind of misrepresentation by students in the admission process.
After taking note of the arguments, the HC bench comprising Justice Desai observed, "Nothing has been brought on record to indicate that the petitioner indulged in any malpractice, attempted to suppress any information, or filed the petition with an intent to misrepresent his case. When a student is seeking admission to a postgraduate medical course, such an inadvertent mathematical mistake should not prove costly to the student, and such a minor error should not be allowed to jeopardise a person's career."
Accordingly, the bench agreed to grant relief to the candidate and allowed the concerned student to rectify his NEET PG application form. However, the bench imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 for allowing him to undertake the admission process afresh.
