HP slashes final year MBBS tuition fee by Rs 20,000
Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has announced that students pursuing the MBBS course at government medical colleges will now have to pay only Rs 20,000 instead of the full annual tuition fee of Rs 40,000 in the last year.
Under the revised fee structure, students will pay Rs 40,000 annually for the first four years, while only Rs 20,000 will be charged in the fifth year, which is equivalent to six months' tuition fee. As a result, the total tuition fee for the 4.5-year MBBS course will come down from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 1.80 lakh.
The revised provision has been incorporated into the MBBS counselling prospectus based on a Himachal Pradesh government letter dated May 19, 2026, and a Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Shimla, letter dated June 5, 2026.
The government later clarified through a letter dated August 10, 2026, that only six months' tuition fee would be collected in the fifth year. The revised fee applies only to tuition fees, while other charges will be separate.
BDS fee hiked by 5%
The tuition fee for BDS courses at private unaided dental colleges in Himachal Pradesh has been increased by five per cent. The three dental colleges in the state include Himachal Dental College, Sundernagar; Bhojia Dental College and Hospital, Baddi-Nalagarh; and Himachal Institute of Dental Sciences, Paonta Sahib.
Atal Medical and Research University (AMRU) Controller of Examinations Dr Rajesh Bhawani said, as reported by Amarujala, that candidates can refer to the counselling prospectus for detailed information regarding fees and other admission-related provisions.
On the other hand, students belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families will be exempted from paying tuition fees at government medical and dental colleges in Himachal Pradesh.
The exemption will apply irrespective of the student's admission quota or domicile status. For this, the students will have to submit a valid and latest BPL certificate at the time of fee payment.
For availing the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) benefit during MBBS and BDS counselling, the rules prescribed by the Himachal Pradesh government will apply. Families with a gross annual income of less than Rs 4 lakh will be eligible for the EWS category. Income from all sources, including salary, agriculture, business and profession, will be considered while calculating the annual income.
