JIPMER invites applications For PhD Entrance Exam 2023, Check out registration process, fees, seat matrix, admission details
Puducherry: Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) has begun registration process for PhD Entrance Examination 2023.
The detailed schedule –
1. On-line Registration Closes on - 26-03-2023; 05:00 PM
2. Download of Hall Ticket from the JIPMER website www.jipmer.edu.in - 30-03-2023; 11:00 AM Onwards
3. Date & Time of Entrance Examination (Single Shift – Online Mode Only) - 02-04-2023, 09:00 AM to 10:30 AM
4. Expected date of publication of Merit List - 15-04-2023
5. Date for Viva-Voce examination - Will be announced later
Details related to online application –
1. Candidates seeking admission to the entrance examinations must apply online only. (Any other mode of application will not be accepted.).
2. Visit JIPMER Main Home page at www.jipmer.edu.in and navigate to the link “Apply online for PhD admission – 2023”.
3. Read the prospectus and instructions carefully.
4. Candidates need not send a hard copy of the application.
5. The application submission process is completed only after clicking the “submit button” after Uploading personal details.
6. The candidate needs to download a copy of their filled-in application, which contains Application No., Personal details, scanned photographs, scanned signatures, and payment details.
7. After submission of the online application by clicking the “Submit” button, a request for change in the details provided in the application will not be considered.
8. Incomplete application, an application with false details will be rejected.
9. In case the online application form is rejected, no correspondence/request for re-consideration will be entertained. A fresh application with another payment has to be made online.
10. Refund of the application fee will not be entertained under any circumstances.
11. The application, once submitted, is final, and no request for change in any data filled by the applicant will be entertained at any stage.
12. If the candidate has found an error of entry committed by them in the application, a new application must be submitted along with the prescribed fee. The earlier application will automatically stand canceled.

Further, the candidates can choose any project stream according to their qualifications. The syllabus and marks distribution are given for the written test on the next page for each project stream. During the interview, the shortlisted candidates can choose a topic within the project stream.
Eligibility –
1. Medical qualification: MD/MS/DM/MCh from a recognized medical college or Diplomate of National Board of Examination in the particular subject per the project's requirement (See table above). The degree(s) should have been registered with the MCI.
2. Nursing Qualification: MSc degree in a nursing specialty (for College of Nursing). The degree(s) should have been registered with the INC
3. Non-Medical Qualification: Master’s Degree (2/3-year course) from a UGC-recognized Indian University or equivalent in the subject per the project's requirement (See table above).
4. Candidates should have at least 50% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination.
5. Candidates with a Master’s Degree through a distance-learning mode are NOT ELIGIBLE
6. Candidates likely to complete the requisite qualifications and degree by 31st March 2023 may also apply. However, they must meet all the requirements for such qualification by this date, and those completing these after 31st March 2023 will not be eligible.
Exam details –
The entrance examinations will only be conducted through a Computer Based Test (CBT) [Online]. The examination will be held on 2nd April 2023 9.00 AM – 10.30 AM. The duration of the examination will be 1½ hours. The venue and time of the examination will be mentioned in the Admit Card/Hall Ticket. No candidates will be permitted to appear in the examination unless they hold a valid "Admit Card/Hall ticket" issued by the Institute and proof of their identification.
Applicants can opt only for three exam cities. The allotment of Exam City would be as per the order of preference chosen by the applicant during online registration on a first-cum-first serve basis and the availability of a vacancy at the chosen center. No request for a change of center would be considered under any circumstances.
If seats for the entrance exam are unavailable in the chosen three exam cities, nearby (exam) cities will be considered for the venue. In case of unforeseen circumstances, the Exam City can be canceled at any time. A new Exam City can be allotted en bloc with due intimation in the website/ text message.

Summary of examination pattern -
1. Written Test (Duration 90 Minutes) - 70 Marks (Section I – 20 questions, Section II – 50 questions)
2. Viva-Voce examination - 30 marks
3. Total Marks – 100
4. Language of Paper – English
5. Type of Objective Questions - Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
6. Marking Scheme - Correct Answer : 1 mark (+) 1, Incorrect Answer : -¼ mark (-) 0.25, Unanswered – 0
7. Method of determining merit - Total score (Written + Viva-Voce examinations)
The pattern of Written Tests –
The written test is based on multiple-choice questions. One mark will be awarded for one correct answer. Each wrong answer will score (minus 0.25) Mark.
Candidates should indicate their choice of project stream (Only one) at the time of application. Once chosen, a change of project stream is not permitted on any account. Based on the PhD project stream, the written test pattern is divided into six projects steams as follows –
1. Project Stream I (Biochemistry)
2. Project Stream II (Public Health)
3. Project Stream III (Obst. & Gynae.)
4. Project Stream IV (Medical Oncology)
5. Project Stream V(A) (Neurology)
6. Project Stream V(B) (Neurology)
The detailed distribution of marks for each stream is enclosed in the notice below.
Hall ticket –
Hall Tickets for the Entrance Examination shall be available for download to candidates whose applications are complete in all respects from 30.03.2023; to 11:00 AM (Tentative). No category/age/name/DOB (Date of Birth) change will be entertained after application submission. The candidates in such cases have to apply afresh before the closing date.
Request for rectification/change of any other details in the hall ticket will not be considered under any circumstance. Candidates should preserve their hall ticket (with the signature and seal of the center representative / Invigilator) after the completion of the exam and need to produce the duplicate hall ticket during counseling.
Candidates will not be allowed to appear for the Entrance Examination unless they produce the hall ticket downloaded from the JIPMER website at the exam centers along with ID proof in original & a photocopy.
The Hall Ticket will contain the following –
1. Name and date of birth as typed by the candidate in the application
2. Photo and signature image as uploaded by the candidate
3. Examination City allotted and Roll Number
Merit –
1. Merit Ranking would be based on the Percentage
2. Minimum percentage for eligibility for the Viva-Voce examination is 50%
3. Candidates who secure less than the minimum percentage in the entrance examination will not be shortlisted for Viva-Voce
4. No e-mail or written communication will be entertained in this regard
Method of resolving ties –
In case of two or more candidates secure an equal percentage in the entrance examination, their inter se merit shall be determined in the following order –
1. Negative marks: The candidate who has the less negative mark will be placed higher than that the other candidate
2. Age: If a tie still exists, the candidate elder by age will be ranked higher
Viva-Voce examination –
1. Only those candidates who have scored 50% and above in the written examination will be shortlisted for the viva-voce test.
2. The viva-voce examination panel consists of Director, Dean (Research), Dean (Academic), and prospective guides in the respective groups.
3. The candidates will be tested on their knowledge of theory and practical aspects of the subjects they have studied in their postgraduate courses.
4. The candidates can review the concept proposals of projects they are interested in before the viva-voce examination.
Duration of the course –
The candidates registered for Ph.D. as full-time research scholars shall conduct research work for a minimum period of three (3) years from the date of provisional registration. They will have to attend the department for research on all working days, except when they are allowed to visit other institutions/laboratories for activities connected with research for a period permitted by the concerned guide and competent authorities.
The full-time PhD research scholars availing intramural fellowships and grants will actively participate in all the academic programs of the department and institute. The duration of the course and certification of research experience will be the period from provisional registration to submission of the thesis. The maximum period of the course shall not exceed five years for full-time candidates and six years for part-time candidates from the date of provisional registration. During this period, the candidate must work in the department.
No financial support will be provided beyond 5 years by the institute under any circumstances. The competent authority can only grant an extension beyond six years. However, the PhD duration shall not exceed six years for a full time Ph.D. scholar. The registration of the candidates who cannot complete their course within the above stipulated period shall stand canceled automatically. Such scholars shall no longer be eligible for any PhD in this Institute.
Selection process –
The selection of PhD candidates will be based on the aggregate marks scored in written test based on multiple choice questions and viva-voce examinations. Candidates scoring 50% or more marks in written and viva separately will only qualify for selection. The shortlisted candidates will be allotted topics per their choices (if available) in the order of their rank from within the project stream they had opted for.
The selection process may extend to two days if the number of applicants is more, so the candidates should come prepared for the same. JIPMER will provide no arrangements for boarding or lodging.
Admission –
Admission to all candidates is based on the merit, category of the candidates, and the availability of seats at the time of counseling. All candidates should report on the due date mentioned in their admission letter, failing which, they will forfeit the right of admission.
PhD stipend –
1. Candidates without financial assistance from extramural sources shall receive a stipend from the Institute at Rs. 25000/- per month for the first three years.
2. Extension period stipend Rs. 20000/- month, restricted to another 2 yrs.
3. No stipend will be given beyond 5 years under any circumstances.
4. Updated PhD stipend amount will be followed as per the “Standing Academic Committee” revised stipend structure from time to time.
Penalty for discontinuation of PhD -
If the candidates discontinue the course for any reason within 12 months, they will be levied a fine of Rs. 25000/-; between 12 to 24 months, they must pay Rs. 50000/- and between 24 -36 months, they have to pay Rs. 75000/-.
