Over 4000 Andhra MBBS Graduates who Studied in Telangana Become Ineligible for PG medical counselling
Hyderabad: Due to the recent changes in the residency rules, introduced by the Telangana Government, around 4,000 medical students from Andhra Pradesh who studied MBBS in Telangana face uncertainty regarding their future.
Issuing a new Government Order (GO) 148, the Telangana Government redefined local eligibility criteria for postgraduate (PG) medical admissions. As a result of these recently introduced changes, these non-local MBBS students have now become disqualified for PG medical counselling in the State.
Now, these students are neither recognised as locals in their home States, now in the State where they studied MBBS. Therefore, they are now effectively non-local in all States.
As per the latest media report by The Hindu, under GO 148, students who completed their schooling in other States, despite completing the MBBS degree in Telangana, are now considered to be ineligible for PG medical counselling within Telangana.
Addressing the media at the Secretariat Media Centre in Hyderabad on Monday, a group of doctors raised the issue and urged the State Government to address the "injustice" due to the recently introduced rules.
Commenting on the matter, Dr. Siva Rama Krishna told The Hindu, "We’ve been part of the Telangana education system from 2014 to 2023, but are now excluded from opportunities for further education within the State. We are not considered local in any State, despite dedicating years of study here."
"The rule change has particularly impacted students from earlier batches, who had no way of foreseeing this shift in policy. This policy is restrictive, no other State enforces similar requirements that disqualify MBBS graduates from their local status for PG admissions," he further added.
Facing uncertainty regarding their future, the medical students have now urged the State Government to introduce a grace period for those who started their MBBS course before 2024, allowing them eligibility for PG counselling under previous rules.
