Vaishno devi medical college MBBS admissions issue raised in Parliament, Health ministry responds
Srinagar: The Union Government has recently clarified in the Lok Sabha that the National Medical Commission (NMC) had initially granted permission to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) in Jammu and Kashmir to admit 50 MBBS students for the academic year 2025-26, but later withdrew the approval following complaints and inspection findings.
The clarification came in response to the question asked by the Member of Parliament, Shri Subbarayan K and Com Selvarak V regarding the reported protests over admission of students at the institute.
The MP sought to know whether it is a fact that some students of the minority community had sought admission after clearing NEET and/a political party had protested against the admission of these students in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME).
Replying to the query, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Smt. Anupriya Patel explained that the NMC, through its Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), had invited applications for new medical colleges via public notices issued in December 2024. SMVDIME applied for establishing a new medical college with an intake of 50 MBBS seats.
Following due evaluation and adherence to prescribed norms, the MARB granted a Letter of Permission (LoP) on September 8, 2025, allowing the institute to admit students for the 2025–26 academic session.
However, after receiving multiple complaints, the NMC conducted a surprise inspection of the college. Based on deficiencies identified during the inspection and subsequent deliberations, the MARB decided to withdraw the Letter of Permission on January 6, 2026. The NMC is an apex statutory body constituted by an Act of Parliament to regulate and oversee medical education across the country.
To safeguard the interests of students already admitted, the Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (JKBOPEE) issued a notification on January 24, 2026, facilitating their accommodation in government medical colleges across the Union Territory.
