1,28,976 MBBS, 85,020 PG seats, 818 medical colleges in India: Health Ministry tells parliament

New Delhi: A total of 818 medical colleges across the country have gained recognition from the National Medical Commission (NMC) since its formation in 2020, the Union Minister of State for Health, Prataprao Jadhav informed the Lok Sabha.

According to the Minister, the data provided by the NMC mentioned that the number of medical colleges in the country has increased from 596 in the academic year 2021–22 to 818 at present.

During the parliament session, a member asked MoS Health Patel about the recognition of medical colleges in the country. Shri Ramvir Singh Bidhuri sought to know the number of medical colleges granted recognition in the country after the formation of the National Medical Commission in 2020, the number of undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate seats that have increased after the setting up of the National Medical Commission, State/UT-wise.

In response to the queries, Jadhav informed that the number of undergraduate (UG) seats has increased from 88,120 in the academic year 2021–22 to 1,28,976 as of now, while the number of postgraduate (PG) seats has increased from 55,595 to 85,020 during the period after the formation of the National Medical Commission.

While responding to the question whether Yoga has been included in medical education since the setting up of the National Medical Commission, the Minister said that Yoga has also been included as a skill in the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Guidelines 2024 for MBBS students.

He said that the National Medical Commission (NMC), through its Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR) Regulations, 2023, has asked medical colleges to set up a Department of Yoga. As a result, medical institutions have been directed to encourage students, doctors, staff members, and their families to take part in Yoga Day activities to spread awareness about the benefits of yoga.

"The Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR) Regulations, 2023 issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) provide for the establishment of a Department of Yoga in medical institutions. Yoga has been included as a competency in the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) Guidelines 2024 for MBBS, and medical institutions have been directed to encourage students, professionals, employees, and their families to actively participate in Yoga Day to promote awareness of the benefits of Yoga," mentioned in the written reply.
