2 new GMCs with 200 MBBS seats to be operational in Uttarakhand
Dehradun: To boost medical education in Uttarakhand, the state is set to launch two new government medical colleges in two districts.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has already inspected the newly constructed government medical college in Rudrapur (Udham Singh Nagar district) with the aim of making it operational this year. An NMC team is also scheduled to inspect the Pithoragarh Medical College soon.
With the opening of these two medical colleges, the number of MBBS seats in the state will increase from 625 to 825.
The NMC team inspected the faculty for MBBS classes, the hospital's OPD and IPD facilities, medical equipment, and the building.
Speaking to AmarUjala, in this regard, Director of Medical Education Dr Ajay Arya stated that there are currently 625 MBBS seats across five government medical colleges. With the opening of two new medical colleges, the number of seats will rise to 825, enabling the state to have more doctors.
Additionally, Uttarakhand Health Minister Subodh Uniyal stated that the government is making efforts to open colleges in Rudrapur and Pithoragarh this year. MBBS classes will commence once approval is received from the NMC. This will provide people with better medical treatment facilities.
Meanwhile, following the state government's proposal seeking approval to commence MBBS classes at the Rudrapur and Pithoragarh medical colleges, an NMC team inspected the Rudrapur college two days ago. The team will soon inspect the Pithoragarh Medical College as well.
100 MBBS seats are proposed for each of the Rudrapur and Pithoragarh medical colleges. MBBS seats at other medical colleges: Dehradun 150, Srinagar 150, Haldwani 125, Almora 100, and Haridwar 100.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently stated that the state government is aiming to establish at least one medical college in every district and expand Jan Aushadhi Centres in Uttarakhand.
