AIIMS Delhi to lease hostels near institute, more than 3,000 medical students, resident doctors to benefit
New Delhi: Aiming to significantly alleviate the challenges faced by students and resident doctors and provide them with a secure and conducive living environment, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has decided to float an expression of interest by July 31 to explore the option of leasing fully furnished hostel accommodations nearer to the premier institute or at a reasonable distance with good connectivity by Delhi Metro.
The decision is taken to prioritize the welfare and safety of its students and resident doctors.
The authorities have been meeting undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD students studying at AIIMS New Delhi and it was noted that one of the major hardships faced by thern is searching for alternate accommodation near AIIMS while awaiting allotment of official hostel accommodation.
“All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, recognizes the challenges faced by its undergraduate, postgraduate PhD students, resident doctors in finding suitable accommodation while awaiting official hostel allotments,” the hospital said in a statement.
Particularly, female students/resident doctors encounter difficulties, often commuting during odd hours using their own transportation or relying on public transport facilities and finding safe secure accommodation, it said.
The purpose of this Expression of Interest (EOI) is to explore the availability of hostel accommodations that offer similar amenities to those provided in AIIMS hostels. The prospective hostels should be properly maintained, secured, and access-controlled to ensure the well-being of the students and resident doctors the AIIMS Director Dr M Srinivas said.
Additionally, fixed or on-demand meals, laundry services, and other basic conveniences should be available to cater to their needs and should provide facilities similar to those provided in AIIMS hostels, Dr Srinivas stated.
In parallel, AIIMS will also approach Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) to explore the possibility of utilizing spare capacities in their guest houses or transit accommodations near AIIMS. These facilities have the potential to provide hostel-like amenities to our students.
Interested parties are invited to participate in this initiative by submitting their proposals and expressing their interest in leasing hostel facilities that meet the outlined requirements.
An office memorandum in this regard has also been issued which states: "This is especially hard for female students who often have to commute for their duties during odd hours with their own transport or by using public transport facilities. To ensure welfare & safety of students and in line with the suggestions received from the students, it is desired that an expression of interest be floated by 31 July 2023 to explore the option of leasing fully furnished hostel accommodation nearer to AIIMS, New Delhi or at a reasonable distance from AIIMS, New Delhi with good connectivity by Delhi Metro. The prospective hostel accommodation's should offer facilities similar to that offered in AIIMS Hostels and should be properly maintained, secured and access controlled. There should be facility for fixed / on-dernand meals, laundry, etc. to ensure basic conveniences for students. Simultaneously, PSU's may also be approached to explore if any of them have spare capacities in their guest houses / transit accommodation near AIIMS where similar hostel like facilities can be provided."
Lauding this move, Resident Doctors Association at AIIMS Delhi, RDA expressed its gratitude on Twitter and stated, Residents’ doctors association, @aiims_newdelhi is thankful to Director #AIIMS for this much awaited order since years. This will benefit more than 3K students & residents who don’t have hostel facilities at present."
