AIIMS Jammu secures Centre's nod to start first batch with 50 MBBS seats
Jammu: The long-sought dream of AIIMS in Jammu has finally come true as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Jammu's Samba district has finally secured the Union Health Ministry's approval to start its first academic session from this year.
The AIIMS in Vijaypur tahsil of Samba district has been sanctioned a total intake capacity of 50 MBBS seats for this academic session of 2020-2021.
The Union minister has expressed his happiness over the newly sanctioned 50 MBBS seats. He posted on his official social media account stating " Congratulations Jammu! Centre has decided to start the first academic session of MBBS at AIIMS, Vijaypur Jammu, from this year with 50 students. NDTV reports that among the 50 allotted MBBS seats 30 reserved seats are for other backward classes including one for OBC priority household while the other 5 seats have been kept reserved for economic weaker section.
As far as the general category candidates are concerned, 22 seats including one in priority household have been kept while 7 seats have been reserved in scheduled caste category and 3 in schedule tribe category.
Previously the Medical Dialogues team reported that Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha had visited the AIIMS site and inspected the pace of the on-going construction work on the prestigious project in September. He had directed the executing agencies to stick to the timelines to ensure the completion of work within the stipulated time-frame. It was informed that LOI was issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) in March-2019 and the funds for the establishment of AIIMS Jammu would be made available by MoH&FW through HEFA(Higher Education Financing Agency). AIIMS Rishikesh is the Mentor Institute for AIIMS Jammu. Sanctioned cost of AIIMS (Phase-I) is Rs 1661 cr (Rs. 1404 cr for C/o Medical college and other infrastructure & Rs. 257 cr for medical equipment and furniture).
