Alleged drug peddling and consumption: Kasturba Medical College terminates two doctors, seven students in connection

Mangaluru: Kasturba Medical College based in Mangaluru has recently terminated the contract appointment of its two doctors and suspended seven students after recently the doctors and medical/dental students in the city were arrested in connection with drug peddling and consumption.

Those two doctors who have been terminated from service include a casualty medical officer and a senior resident doctor in the department of general medicine. Apart from them, the college has suspended seven students after they had been booked for substance abuse.

The medical college has taken this decision on the basis of a report of its internal disciplinary committee, the City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar informed TOI.

Referring to the suspension order of the students, the Commissioner added, "They have extended cooperation for ongoing investigation into the case and promised to help police in creating awareness against substance abuse."

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the city police had arrested ten people, including an overseas citizen of Indian origin, a surgeon, a medical officer, MBBS, and dental students on the charges of alleged consumption and peddling of ganja. Of them, two are doctors, seven are medical/dental students from three professional colleges in the city, hailing from various States, and four of them women.

Recently, the city police of Mangaluru arrested three more persons, including a doctor and a pharmacy student in connection with drug use and peddling taking the total arrests so far in the case to 13.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar has informed that Kasturba Medical College has terminated its two doctors and suspended seven medical students who were booked in the substance abuse case.

"Police have taken a few more persons into custody for inquiry. They will be arrested, and cases will be booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act if their involvement in drug peddling or consumption is proved. The majority of drug peddlers aim for easy money," he further informed the daily.

Referring to the arrest of an Overseas Citizen of India on January 7, the Commissioner mentioned that police will write to the concerned authorities for cancelling his visa.

"All measures are in place to strengthen the neighbourhood watch system. Guidelines have been issued to paying guest accommodations where a large number of students and employees stay. Action will also be taken against skill games and other gambling centres in the city," he added.
