'Beaten with belts' MBBS student alleges ragging, assault at Doon medical college, 24 medicos penalised
Dehradun: An incident of ragging and assault by senior MBBS students on their juniors has been reported from Government Doon Medical College, Patel Nagar, Dehradun.
The college's Anti-Ragging Committee is investigating the matter, and the administration has imposed fines on 24 students found guilty of indiscipline.
According to media reports, a complaint by a first-year MBBS student has raised concerns over student safety at Doon Medical College, after he alleged that seniors took him outside the campus and beat him with a belt, leaving him "shaken and terrified".
A student from the 2025 batch of Government Doon Medical College, who was allegedly assaulted, stated in a written complaint to the administration that since the incident, he has been mentally disturbed and living in fear, reports ANI. Juniors were allegedly beaten with belts.
In a written complaint submitted to the hostel warden on Jan 13, the student said the incident took place a day earlier. He named two seniors from the 2023 and 2024 batches, alleging that after thrashing him, the accused later accosted him inside the hostel, prompting him to report the matter formally.
"I am scared of retribution, and this left me shaken," the student stated in his complaint, quotes TOI.
Furthermore, the complainant claimed he was taken outside the college premises, forced to trim his hair against his will and made to sleep outside, acts he described as "humiliating and coercive", adds India Today
Medical College Principal Geeta Jain told ANI that the Anti-Ragging Committee is conducting a detailed inquiry into the incident. She stated that strict action will be taken against the guilty students once the committee submits its report. The Principal added that the Discipline Committee has recorded statements of the students and that indiscipline will not be tolerated in the college.
The college administration has said that if the allegations against the students are found to be true, strict action will be taken against the accused, which may include suspension from the college.

College principal Dr Geeta Jain told TOI, "Our anti-ragging committee is probing the complaint, and we will know more once the inquiry is completed. We expect the findings by next week. There is zero tolerance when it comes to ragging," she said.
Doon Medical College has faced allegations of ragging in the past as well. In Sept 2023, an intern doctor and seven seniors were suspended after a junior student alleged he was beaten. In another incident in Nov 2019, six students were suspended following a complaint of harassment.
