Bharatratna Atalbihari Vajpayee Medical College gets recognised for bond service

Pune: The Maharashtra government has recognised Bharatratna Atalbihari Vajpayee Medical College (BAVMC), Pune, as a centre where MBBS and postgraduate (PG) medical graduates from government colleges can complete their one-year mandatory bond service.
With this, medical graduates from government colleges can now work at BAVMC and its associated hospital, Kamala Nehru Hospital (KNH), instead of being posted elsewhere. This move will also help ease the shortage of doctors in Pune’s civic-run hospitals.
As per the state’s order on April 28, MBBS and PG doctors who completed their education in other government medical colleges and BAVMC can now serve at the college's hospital for one year as part of the mandatory bond service before pursuing higher studies.

The approval was granted by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) after thorough evaluation based on letters issued in October 2024 and April 2025.
Further, the state has also directed DMER to sign a formal agreement (MoU) with PMC’s medical education trust to manage this setup smoothly. However, it has also instructed that this arrangement should not reduce the number of doctors posted in state-run hospitals and primary health centres.
BAVMC currently has four batches of MBBS students, with 100 students in each. The first batch, which began in 2021, is expected to complete its course in mid-2026. Once these students graduate, they are likely to begin their internship at KNH.
Speaking to HT, Dr Shilpa Pratinidhi, dean of BAVMC, said, "The exact number of bonded doctors that we will get has not yet been finalised. We will soon complete the MoU process with the DMER. Once the bonded doctors start working at our institute, it will help improve the quality of services provided by the PMC at Kamala Nehru Hospital (KNH)."
Bharatratna Atalbihari Vajpayee Medical College Pune (BAVMC) is the first medical college of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) through a joint initiative of PMC and PMC-MET (Medical Education trust), and its attached hospital - Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH), is a 400-bedded multispecialty hospital located at Mangalwar Peth, Pune. It is one of the biggest hospitals run by PMC and has good clinical material available for the training of the medical graduates.
