DAVV to set up new medical college in Indore
Indore: Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) has already started its preparation to establish a new medical college.
DAVV has already formed a seven-member team that will be responsible for determining the feasibility of establishing a medical college.
The committee is led by rector Prof Ashok Sharma and it includes Prof Rajesh Sharma, Dr AK Dwivedi, Dr DK Sharma, Ashok Phatak, Prajwal Khare (coordinator) and Anurag Dwivedi. The construction of this medical college has been a long-sought dream of DAVV.
In 2001, the university received 50 acres of land from the district administration for the purpose of opening a medical college at Bada Banagarda. However, the administration reclaimed 25 acres after the university failed to take significant steps to establish a medical college until 2013. Last year, DAVV was informed that the administration had also taken back the remaining 25 acres of land, reports Free Press Journal.
The administration granted DAVV 30 acres of land at Bada Bangarda in exchange for land on the UTD campus to relocate a Lord Shiva temple at Bhawarkuan Square and Bhawarkuan police station and to construct a water tank. Despite originally rejecting the offer, the DAVV was forced to accept it after the higher education minister intervened.
While the DAVV has agreed to hand over the land sought by the district government, the latter has yet to do so in Bada Bangarda. A medical college will cost around Rs 700 crores to build. DAVV does not have that much money right now, but a PPP model, according to a professor, could be a solution to the issue of finance.
Devi Ahilya University or DAVV caters to the educational needs of the most industrially developed district of Madhya Pradesh, Indore on one hand and to the seven tribal and rural backward districts of the State on the other. The university has more than 300 affiliated colleges imparting education at under-graduate and post-graduate levels in basic and professional disciplines. The well-recognized medical institution that comes under its orbit is Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, Indore.
