GMC Amravati Gets NMC Show-cause notice over deficiencies

Show Cause Notice
Amravati: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a show-cause notice to the Government Medical College in Amaravati over inadequate infrastructural facilities and faculty shortage.
In its inspection report, the Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body has highlighted that the college has less than 50 percent of the teaching staff prescribed in NMC's Maintenance of Standard Medical Education Regulations 2023, Rule 8, Live Nagpur has reported.
Further, the Commission has also issued directions to the medical college to immediately start the recruitment process to fill up the vacant posts at the medical college.
As per the latest media report by Lokmat, government medical colleges in Maharashtra received an NMC show cause notice in the month of May. The Commission issued the show-cause after the infrastructure of the government medical colleges in the State was recently inspected by teams from the Maharashtra University of Medical Sciences.
These teams highlighted in their reports major deficiencies in the infrastructure of government medical colleges. They also concluded that less than 50 per cent teaching staff were available at the colleges as opposed to the norms. Consequently, the Commission issued the show cause notices using Section 8 of Chapter 3 of the Maintenance of Standard Medical Education Regulations 2023. NMC has the authority under these regulations to impose a maximum fine of Rs one crore for each deficiency in medical colleges. The college administration has already responded to the NMC notice issued in May regarding the required number of beds, OTs, and teaching staff.
The Government Medical College in Amaravati has also received a show cause notice from NMC. The Live Nagpur has reported that the college was inaugurated in October last year, and the permission to fill up 450 posts was granted. However, the recruitment process could not be completed. In its inspection report, NMC has expressed discontent over the deficiencies in the college.
Lokmat has reported that NMC's show cause notice to Amravati GMC is attributed to the mismanagement of the State's Medical Education Department. The policy of transferring teaching staff from established government medical colleges was adopted to show a documentary picture of meeting the criteria of the National Medical Commission for approval of medical colleges.
Commenting on the matter, the Dean of Amravati Medical College, Dr. Kishore Ingole told the Daily, "We have the required number of beds. We have informed the NMC that the recruitment process and interviews for the teaching staff are also underway."
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the National Medical Commission (NMC) had issued show-cause notices to almost all government medical colleges in Pune over vacancies of professors, staff, and insufficient infrastructure.
NMC issued the show cause after its team recently visited and examined the facilities available at the medical colleges. During the inspection, the NMC team found that the GMCs in Pune did not have enough staff/faculty, and facilities.
