In the next 5 years, every district in India to have 1 medical college: Union Minister Amit Shah

Hisar: Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah recently highlighted the significant advancements in India’s medical education and healthcare infrastructure over the past decade during an event in Hisar, Haryana. He shared key statistics that showcase the government’s focus on expanding medical colleges and enhancing healthcare facilities.

Shri Amit Shah emphasized the growth of medical colleges in India. In 2014, India had 387 medical colleges, which has now increased to 766 in 2024. The number of MBBS seats has also surged from 51,000 in 2014 to 1.15 lakh, with an additional 85,000 seats planned for the next five years. Additionally, the number of Post Graduate (PG) seats has grown from 31,000 to 73,000 in the same period, marking a significant improvement in medical education capacity.

The Union Minister also pointed to the government’s substantial investments in medical infrastructure. Shri Amit Shah said that the Modi government has made significant strides in the field of medical infrastructure. He said, the Modi government has spent 64,000 crore rupees on public health centers and community health centers, building a strong foundation for medical infrastructure. He also highlighted the establishment of 730 integrated public health labs, 4,382 block public health units, and 602 new critical care boxes over the past 10 years.

Shri Shah highlighted the dramatic increase in the health budget, which has risen from ₹33,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.33 lakh crore in the 2025-26 budget. This funding supports the government’s efforts to enhance healthcare access, particularly for underserved areas.

The Union Minister also assured that by 2024, every district in India will have its own medical college, further expanding the reach of medical education and improving healthcare delivery across the country.

Union Home Minister said that in 2014, there were 7 AIIMS in the country, while in 2024, there are 23 AIIMS. Similarly, in 2014, there were 387 medical colleges in the country, and today there are 766. He mentioned that the number of MBBS seats, which was 51,000 in 2014, has now increased to 1.15 lakh and an additional 85,000 seats will be added over the next 5 years. He also stated that in 2014, there were 31,000 PG seats, which have now increased to 73,000. Shri Shah assured that in the next 5 years, there will not be a single district in the country without a medical college.
