Juniors Allegedly Forced to strip, dance, drink alcohol: MGM Medical College Jamshedpur files police complaint against 5 MBBS interns
Jamshedpur: Taking strict action, the authorities of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) have filed a police complaint against five MBBS interns for allegedly ragging their juniors from the 2021 and 2023 batches.
As per a TOI news report, the ragging incident came to light when the juniors filed a complaint to the Anti-Ragging Committee of the National Medical Commission (NMC) accusing their seniors from batch 2018, who are post-MBBS students undergoing internship, of ragging them.
In the complaint, the juniors alleged that the seniors often arrived at night in a drunken state, playing loud music that coerced them to dance to popular tunes. On the night of June 29, they claimed that the five accused seniors came to their hostel room in an intoxicated state and demanded that the juniors join them in drinking. Then, they were told to undress and dance, reports TOI.
Further, they claimed that the environment of alcohol consumption, loud music, and intimidation disturbed their studies and created a sense of fear among their peers, according to The Avenue Mail news report.
After receiving the complaint on July 1, the NMC directed the MGMMCH management to inquire into the matter and submit a report. Following this, the Anti-ragging cell (ARC) of MGMMCH filed a complaint at the MGM police station after an urgent meeting was conducted on July 5 by the Anti-Ragging Cell Committee at MGM Medical College.
The names of the five accused students were identified by Patamda DSP Bachan Dev Kujur and MGM police station in-charge Ram Lal Mandal after they visited the medical college to investigate the matter.
Speaking to TOI, MGMMCH principal Dr K N Singh on Saturday said, “A police complaint has been lodged against five named interns of the 2018 batch. FIR will be lodged if the charges are proved to be true.”
"The ARC panel, led by Dhalbhum sub-divisional officer (SDO) Parul Singh, interrogated the accused interns for hours on Friday but each one of them claimed innocence," Dr Singh added.
Meanwhile, the principal of the medical college had assured that strict action would be taken against the accused students if found guilty of ragging and harassing the juniors.
This incident is reportedly the fourth case of ragging between January and April this year. Medical Dialogues team had reported in April that the administration of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH), announced new measures to combat ragging after a student was suspended for harassing a first-year medico.
