Lt General Kavita Sahai becomes first woman commandant of Army Medical College
Lucknow: In a remarkable milestone, Lieutenant General Kavita Sahai has become the first woman to be appointed as the new commandant of the Army Medical Corps Centre and College, Lucknow.
Her appointment marks a historical moment in the 74 years of the institute's existence as she is the first woman to hold this position which traditionally was held by men.
She was given the charge on February 1 after Lt Gen V. Sabid Syed retired from the service on January 29. Her role includes the duties of Commandant of the AMC Centre and College, officer-in-charge of AMC Records, and Colonel Commandant of the AMC.

According to an IANS report, Lt Gen Kavita is the recipient of the Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal. She was posted as an additional HR at the office of the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), Delhi.
An alumna of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, she was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps (AMC) in 1986. Lt Gen Sahai did MD (pathology) in 1994 and DNB (pathology) in 1997 from AFMC. The general officer also did a two-year fellowship in onychopathology from AIIMS Delhi and holds a diploma in health professional education from FAIMER-Keele University, UK.
In her 37-year-long career, Lt Gen Sahai has held various important administrative and staff appointments such as HOD and professor, of lab medicine at Base Hospital, Delhi; professor in the department of pathology at AFMC; HOD and professor of lab medicine at Army Hospital (Research and Referral) Delhi.
She has also tenated multiple staff appointments viz Consultant (Path) at Army Hospital (R&R) New Delhi, Deputy Commandant & Senior Executive Medical Officer (SEMO) at Command Hospital, Northern Command and Addl DGAFMS (HR) at office of the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), New Delhi, TV India live reports.
Sahai has written more than 100 research papers which have been published in national and international journals. She also received the Chief of Army Staff Commendation in 2008 and 2012 for her meritorious services.
