Ludhiana to Get Its First ESIC-run Medical College by 2025
Ludhiana- Ludhiana will soon be getting its first government medical college as Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is going to set up its institute in the city.
The college will be built on 25 acres of land, therefore, ESIC is currently working with the district administration to acquire suitable land. On this, recently a delegation of ESIC met Additional Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Bains regarding the land, reported HT. After discussions with ESIC officials, ADC Bains informed the delegation that the administration would soon select the plot for the medical college.
Along with this, the college is planning to start with a 300-bed ESIC hospital by the next academic year i.e. 2025. However, officials said that as soon as the new building is constructed, the college will have a separate hospital with 500 beds.
In this regard, speaking to the HT, Rakesh Kumar said “We plan to start college next academic year from our hospital. And as we get the land and the building comes up, we will build a separate hospital”.
A meeting was recently held regarding setting up the first government medical college as ESIC. In the meeting, ESIC regional director Rakesh Kumar said that the corporation has decided to open 10 new medical colleges across the state, including one in Ludhiana. Currently, ESIC runs seven hospitals in the state i.e. Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Mandi Gobindgarh and Mohali.
The reason behind setting up the first Government Medical College as ESIC in Ludhiana is that the state has the largest concentration of industries. With this, ESIC will help in providing benefits to insured industrial workers who earn less than Rs 21,000 per month.
After establishing, it will be the first government tertiary care healthcare facility in the district. However, there are around 17 lakh ESIC beneficiaries across the district.
