Maharashtra to add 200 MBBS seats with NMC approval to new private medical college in Aurangabad, Nashik's GMC expansion
Mumbai: To promote medical education, approval has reportedly been granted for a total of 150 new seats at a private medical college in Aurangabad, and 50 seats have been added to the Government Medical College located at the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) campus in Nashik.
This will give students aspiring to pursue medical studies in the state the opportunity to choose at least 200 additional seats this year.
One of the new private medical colleges that received approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) this year is BSP Medical College and Hospital in Aurangabad.
According to the TOI media news report, the Aurangabad-based 'Shiva Trust', which runs several colleges offering courses in nursing, physiotherapy, and Ayurveda, has received approval from the NMC to launch a new medical college, 'BSP Medical College and Hospital,' with 150 seats, starting this academic year.
NMC approval has been received, but the trust is awaiting the issuance of the state government's resolution.
Speaking on this, Balasaheb Pawar, president, Shiva Trust, said, “Once the GR is out, the MUHS inspection will be carried out and the seats will be added to the seat matrix. We are hoping that all the approvals are in before the counselling process starts this year in the second week of Aug”.
However, this will be the fourth medical college in Aurangabad; currently, there is one government, one private, and one deemed medical college there. The college has already recruited some teachers, and the recruitment process for others is underway. It has an affiliated hospital with a capacity of 605 beds.
The number of medical colleges in India has increased from 387 in 2014 to 844 at present, while undergraduate (MBBS) seats have increased from 51,348 to 1,39,489 and postgraduate (PG) seats from 31,185 to 86,360, the Union Health Ministry informed Parliament.
Replying to a starred question in the Lok Sabha on July 24, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel said the opening up of new medical colleges in the remote and underserved areas of the country, coupled with an increase in MBBS seats, will enhance the availability of doctors and further improve healthcare delivery.
