MGM Indore 1st year MBBS students allege ragging by seniors, institute submits report to NMC after complaint
Indore: In a recent incident, a group of first-year MBBS students at MGM Medical College submitted a ragging complaint against senior students in the hostel, following which the administration initiated an inquiry into the incident.
Seeking details of the incident, the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) anti-ragging cell sought a report from the college within 24 hours. While the college administration has submitted a preliminary report, a detailed investigation is currently underway.
According to the complaint, the first-year students staying in Block 6 of the hostel alleged that senior students knocked and pounded on their doors between 1 am and 3 am and tried to enter their rooms.
However, the students said they did not open their doors out of fear and alleged that security personnel were present at the time but did not stop the seniors from entering the block.
Further, they alleged that they were called for a meeting during the recent Ganeshotsav, where their mobile phones were temporarily taken away.
Taking note of the complaint, the college’s anti-ragging committee held a meeting on Monday and started reviewing CCTV footage from Block 6. The block is reportedly restricted to first-year students, and senior students are not allowed to enter the area.
In addition, the administration also recorded statements from the first-year students and senior students as part of the inquiry.
Confirming that an inquiry is underway and a preliminary report had been submitted, MGM Medical College dean Dr Arvind Ghanghoria told TOI, "We have submitted the primary report to National Medical Commission’s anti-ragging cell while the detailed probe is ongoing. We are examining the CCTVs and also recording statements of the seniors. The detailed report will soon be prepared and based on it, appropriate action will be taken."
This is the second ragging complaint reported at the institute within 10 days. Earlier, a postgraduate student at MTH Hospital had filed a ragging complaint, following which the head of a department was removed, as reported by TOI.
Medical Dialogues had reported that a first-year resident doctor at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of MGM Medical College, Indore, attempted suicide by administering an excessive dose of insulin. She was rescued by the police and taken to MY Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It was alleged that the doctor attempted self-harm after facing a hostile working environment, including ragging and harassment by seniors. Three second-year resident doctors have been accused.
The matter reached the National Medical Commission (NMC) after the brother of the concerned doctor submitted a complaint before the Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body. He requested the Commission to conduct an independent, impartial, and time-bound inquiry against the 3 accused JR-2 residents and the role and alleged inaction of the HoD.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, the Anti-Ragging Cell of the National Medical Commission (NMC) directed the institute's Dean/Principal to submit an Action Taken Report.
